Our package works out at about £1 a week.
O2 don't do a simple payg sim any more. There is a minimum £5 per month topup.
Some of the non mainstream networks like Giffgaff still do a simple payg sim. To keep it active you need to make a call or text every 6 months or so.
You will just need to remember to use the sim regularly.

Those are the main issues. I believe the Texecom 4G communicator will use data only. The SIM card will be installed within that. Which has an anti tamper screwed on cover too. (For a burglar alarm system)
So the sim is not easily accessible and I will not be able to send texts or make calls with it.
I guess I may need to look at the cheapest monthly contract data only SIMs I can get.
PAYG providers now prevent people using cheap SIMs on gates etc as they got wise to it and don't make much money. So they want you using the SIM and if I pay monthly then its less likely they will want to stop it even with super low data usage.
