Diesel/paraffin space heaters

If you google it:

"One liter of diesel contains approximately 10 to 10.7 kilowatt hours (kwh) of stored energy"

Then you gonna have losses - you know this as the exhaust path is gonna be hot.

I guess this to be about 30% - unless you scavenge some heat from the exhaust path.

Poorly insulated areas - like workshops - need about 3x the heat input than a well insulated house.

16kw is enough to heat about 60/70sq mtrs of floor area of a workshop.

So the maths - if it is not burning 2ltrs of fuel an hour - it not gonna cut it...

The issue with the small 10kw Webasto chinese heaters is the warm up time of the room and if the doors get opened the heat is all gone.
That's quite a decent size garage, an indirect space heater would heat that size area up in 5 mins, it works on a thermostat, so only comes on at the selected temp, so dwouldn't use significantly more fuel than Webasto type heaters, that run conatantly
You can also mix filtered old engine oil with the kerosene in these machines, no issues

It seems that they do a 20kw version of this one which falls, more or less, within budget, though you do have to add ducting (which ain't cheap!), and I've got a plan for where it could sit in my workshop. This would however, depend on whether there is a maximum length of exhaust ducting it can cope with. I'd be looking at up to about 3m from the top of the heater to the rain cap.

Oh, I almost forgot, coincidentally, It also fits the bill for my lad!

I just need to convince him he should buy it (or one very similar, I am aware there are a number of similar items, similarly priced).

Fortunately, my workshop is reasonably well insulated (timber construction, a combinaton of 100mm rockwool/Kingspan all round) and is a little under 80sq mtrs (10.8 x 7.2, 2m to the eaves, 3.5 to the ridge). Positioned inside with the exhaust ducted through an outer wall, I think 20kw should work quite well. That 20kw Trotec burns upto 1.9 l/hr.

Out of interest, the current heating (electric convection) is 6kw (3 x 2kw wall heaters) and whilst it does take a couple of hours to get the temperature up on a very cold morning, will maintain 16 - 18 degrees with ease even when sub zero outside.

I have a 225,000 btu one running on a thermostat set at 15°c it runs 24/7 this time of the year, and 2x 275,000 btu ones when IAM working in there. Never get any damp or condensation. They are all LPG and piped to the farms 8x4ton propane supply tanks. No idea what they cost to run I doubt it's cheap. Totally uninsulated building with asbestos sheet walls and roof.

1 kg of propane is around 13.9 KWh

2x 80 KWh = 160 / 13.9 = 11.51 kg an hour

47kg bottle would not last very long

I have a propane space heater. It eats gas and leaves everywhere damp. It rarely gets used now.

I have chinese diesel heaters, replaced kero burning heaters, and somewhere i have a bottle gas radiant fire that I lit once to just see if it worked as a backup when someone gave it me.
But... this year so far I've lit one heater up once, in the workshop with water in it because it was hovering around 2c and I didnt want frozen pipes/coolant.
And thats because my wife gifted me some electrically heated thermals that take two 16000ma battery packs, and even on their lowest setting I find myself turning them off most the time anyway.
I'm fairly hardy and resiliant to the cold, but I find myself out there for hours getting little jobs done.
Just a thought, heat you, not the entire space...
