Just brush mine with one of those spiky Denman style brushes, which gets the tangles out ok.
I've never ever put any kind of weird 'stuff' on the whiskers either..

The problem with mine, & his, by the sounds of it, is that it's not tangled. The hairs literally do just curl, & point in any direction they damn well please. They never grow straight & down. It's like a beard version of frizzy hair. You know full well that if you did find something which made it straight, the first hint of water near it & it would revert.

Yep, it's got a mind if it's own...I can wash it, dry it, comb it and it's straight for half a day...after that it just makes up what it wants to do and a comb won't bother it

I usually steal my wife's hair conditioner and leave it for a while then wash out , a bit of beard oil the following day . I have a wooden comb. If i dont i end up looking like an unkempt old codger
