Ive been looking at registering the Volvo as a camper to make life easier. As it transpires, it’s almost impossible to achieve. I found an article by a camper magazine that did a FOI request of the dvsa for rates of actual granted changes to camper, it was something like only 5% of applications were successful.

The rules are ambiguous- “camper style graphics” but no sort of evidence of what these might be etc.

It’s been covered but a lot of ambos are over 3.5t so require a c1, or downplating. Be aware that to downplate, it must have at least a tonne of payload available, so it fly goes over the weighbridge at 2600 you’re off to a loser immediately

Quite a few people get ex British gas/bt etc vans as they're often reasonable well looked after being fleet vehicles and have become a popular type to modify.

It's worth looking out for ex charity minibuses. Lots of charities have them but only use them once or twice a week then sell them when they get old, and they are generally very well maintained.

the issue starts with the engine if its not good enough you have a very expensive build to replace that said engine second hand is not the best pick

with engines nowadays alot are not diy engines or even garage fixed engines ( your looking at a new engine or a rebuild )

bodywork is the other thing how fast will it turn into a scrap heap

the other main issue stands with idiots on the road high expense means youve lost everything in one simple bump or crash as insurance will never pay full value

i would not trust an ambulance or fleet vehicle engine one will be driven hard and if the policy has been drive on a cold engine its going to be sever for the fleet engines there not serviced properly

height is the main issue lots of places dont allow even ambulances through and that also goes for high roof vans getting parking in a town center is annoying you will face dual bay costs due to length as your taking up 2 bays and that means a fine is possible

im going to start off with mercedes sprinter lwb so its long and high take note of builds there is plenty out there to look and use ideas

any van you buy used its going to be a full strip out go after every rust point and clean and seal so it wont rust or find a vehicle thats been galvanised

One thing to bear in mind, live in needs are very different from holidays. You want a fixed bed, and table and chairs and kitchen. After a day's work the last thing you want to do is assemble the bed and dismantle the living room. You also need (imho) a comfortable armchair to sit and watch TV or listen to music whatever. I'm other words, a home.
One other thing, if you start converting anything, the best place to start is with the heating system. That way you can do the rest of it in the warm.

We built a sofa which unfolded into a double bed, which I built, kept the mattresses in the Luton which was too low to sleep in.

Had another small sofa facing the woodburner, which was a permanent sofa.

Mind you it was a 7.5 ton horsebox.
