Storing mig wire.

I've just ordered a different size wire to use on my mig. That means il, I have one on and one off the machine is there anything I can do to stop corrosion. My garage/workshop is attached to the house but only single brick so, although it doesn't freeze, the temperature can change quite a lot. I assume misting it with oil is not a good plan.

Resealable poly bag like freezer bags with a zip on the top. If you have a desiccant pack to put in , it will last forever.

Not having an airing cupboard, it lives in the front bedroom wardrobe. Next to the spare Lancia wheels and tyres. All eight of them.

Many thanks for the advice, do I need to buy eight or could I just get away with four? It's just occurred to me, I have five Austin seven wire wheels in the shed, will they do the same if I put them in the wardrobe?

Someone gave me four "Rays" alloys for it - three of them have had the spigot bore enlarged for some reason - fitted with ancient Firestone winter tyres.

And I picked up four OE alloys that had just been refurbished maybe 20 yrs ago - badly described on ebay and I suspect I paid less for all four than the individual refurb cost per wheel.


So far, I've not had any issues with wire left in the welder all the time over the last 20 odd years - that statement almost guarantees I will have next time I go to use it!


Also in the same wardrobe - one radio controlled plane, one rear-motor and one mid-motor VBC 1/10 R/C racing buggies, one unbuilt Tamiya Bruiser knock-off, one set of fold down windscreen stantions from some pre-war car and numerous copies of the Peoples Friend.

None of which especially help to keep the wire and rods damp free.

A Celebrations tub is just the right size for a 5 kg reel.

Trouble is, you have to eat the contents first.

I told my partner about this thread and, without hesitation, she said "so they live alone then". We've now agreed I can put one small box on the airing cupboard. The wheels must stay in the shed.

you keep your tv in a display cabinet!

I used to keep my sticks in the central heating boileer, they have been in the shed of doom since the boiler went; now the sticks are bit’s of metal in a bag full of damp mud. my 5kg roll of wire lives in the welsh dresser, but I have leftit outside for the last few weeks. I am going t9 be using it today, and will probably find it’s nice n rusty.

Having donned the appropriate armour explain that 'partner' means sharing and compromise. I trust she is banned from the garage, shed, your car............................
