I am not (yet) giving up on this 2200HL.v2 jack (see other thread). I have it working fine now but it does not lower without weight pushing down on it*. This style of jack uses a large compression spring running around the piston rod which gets compressed inside the ram when the piston rod extends.
(* I have, since dismantling again last night, noticed the flow to the release valve, via a mesh filter, was not totally clear, and is a very small orifice on the pump side (1mm ?).. so who knows, it might be better now even without the spring being replaced)
Sealey supplier says no stock of the spring. Other Sealey supplier is trying to sell me a "9.4mm spring" for £3.89. clearly wrong part.
When I open up the ram, there is a good 80 - 100mm of space between the spring and the bottom of the ram, i.e. for the last 80mm of movement, the spring is loose at one end and does nothing. So on that basis, it looks like this spring has lost its springiness and shrunk from ~540mm length to its current length of 425mm (estimating at 540mm original-length, since I would expect it to be under pressure at least a bit even when the rod is fully retracted.) Does that seem at all likely?
Any hints for finding such a spring. I did some extensive searching yesterday. An AliExpress seller can make me a custom spring, had a quote of £37 delivered for 5.0mm-wire-dia/42mm/540mm. Note this is 5.0, dia. I didn't bother asking for 5.5 since the seller had no listings. I figured a change of length is easily possible but other parameters not so.
I think it might be more appropriate to be searching for 0.217" wire diameter. This seems about spot on, and according to one table online, it is a known-used wire diameter.
There are lots of sellers offering up to 300mm. I am considering putting 2 or 3 together (say, 300mm + 150mm + 80mm). At least that way I have the option to remove one of them if it is too much, but springs inside rubbing ends could cause metal bits to become added to the fluid.
Some pictures attached.
