Fridge freezer cool, not cold

I have a premonition - I see a new fridge/freezer in my immediate future....
To put that off as long as possible (It's not even 17 years old yet - by about 4 months..) - do we have any appliance engineers ?

The compressor and all fans are still running, and it's cooling, but only to abut 12degrees. I don't want to spend £60 on an engineer callout if all he's going to say is it needs a new compressor.

Thoughts on what I can check please?

No, compressor doesn't feel really hot. Cool if anything.

What make/model/sort of fridge freezer is it? Is the heat exchanger at the back clear of dust?

im sure you have cheaked the cooling pipes coil/rad is clean (from dust and cobwebs etc) and the fan spins at the back of the unit

apart from that there is only a thermostait that turns the the unit on and off when its to hot and off when its cold and the dial inside the fridge (unless its digital thats worth a cheak flick that to the coldist setting and make sure the fan and compresser is turning on and off when the dial tells it to

I'd the freezer working ok and the fridge not? On one of ours the fridge above, shared a duct with the freezer below. The fan in the duct had iced up solid. Think that might have been a thermostat issue...easy enough fix.

Another time the freezer was only at circa 10⁰C. That was the thermostat:

Where is the freezer situated ? it can get too cold out in a garage in severe cold weather / or if the back gets an icy draught . We had to ensure we got an outside garage quality freezer for that's where it lives.

I've also used contact cleaner & then WD 40 spray in the thermostat on house fridges & freezers as sometimes they need a smidgeon of clean & lube at the dial switch

It's an american fridge freezer, in the kitchen - digital selection, display etc, set to -20 and 1 degree, but showing 13 deg (Freezer) and 6 Fridge - but actually around 12 degrees inside both compartments.
Tried the 'Fast Freeze' and seemed to make no difference to what's running, or temperature.

OMG our FO, Big Yank FF is approaching terminal time too, as it's16 & 1/2 years old . It seems like your FF is dying or dead as both compartments are the same temp.

AO do a fantastic delivery service . will take the old one away and have a big range of the latest to choose from .

Out next one will have plumbed in water to the chiller / cube maker as we found if no ice or chilled water was used for a few weeks it took on a stale taint , than meant we had to use baby bottle sterilizer at full strength , run through the machine after emptying the ice cube maker hopper to expel the old water and let the fresh sit in the system of two days then put through three full rinse jugs of fresh clean cold tap water to clear the ice cube making device .

Do you have any internal drain hole( s) inside the machine that might be blocked ?

our old Samsung side by side did thew same only after 4 years...changed all the sencers but still the same....
switched it off for a couple of hours, then back on again....It worked for a couple of months the the same fault cycled again....
Kept the fridge for another 10 years .....it be cecame a ritual....still better than a grand for another new one...

AO are good for selection of models at good prices, but I don't rate the delivery/collection service, we were replacing separate fridge & freezer with a combined unit and on 2 or 3 phone calls confirmed they would take both old units on delivery day, they only took one

Several years ago my fridge freezer did something similar. Turning it off at the wall then back on would cause it to start cooling after awhile it would stop cooling and internal temps would start rising. This is an auto defrost one. What had happened was the heating element in the freezer had gone open circuit and the controller couldn’t see the temperature rise during the auto defrost cycle so it would just sit there doing nothing.
