As above, where you can shine as a knowledgeable human is to assess the answer for credibility and errors (see spring washers point; no-one in the world talks of 'mystery meat').

it wasn't an error, it was obvious this was copied and pasted for anyone with half an eye. I did not claim this was my knowledge but maybe i should have explicitly stated, it was literally to answer a simple question, and generally if you don't leave wiggle room for AI to interpret anything it gets it correct. I didn't realise this was such a pi**ing contest

Kind of insults the OP who could have chosen to use AI themselves and devalues the knowledge and experience of forum members.

Was the answer to the question "Will M6 bolts be strong enough for this job?" incorrect? if not then how on gods green earth then how does that devalue peoples knowledge? the same answer from someone who learnt it is more valuable?

All im hearing is AI bad, and people who use AI bad. the original answer don't insult anyone, its correct information and youre just getting your pants in a bunch because the answer didnt come from a shed.

That I agree with, but that wasn't the original question, maybe the question should have been framed differently to accommodate design discussion and the best fixings for said design.....or im just being pedantic.

Use the correct bolt (with plain shank) not set screws too.

Ideally, I agree, but unlikely to be able to get them short enough, so will have to use setscrews.

I would use M8s in any case.

Thats a valid response, and being the pedantic sh*t I am I will reiterate that and opinion wasn't sought in the original post, just an answer to the question.

As for AI, its coming whether you like it or not, there are a ridiculous amount of issues with it that governments are too incompetent to deal with so it might be slower than planned, especially as the DC power requirements wont get their jollies from wind or solar and energy prices are too high in this country already. The other issues are the biases of the people who programme algorithms and the ability of civil servants to implement security.

through nepotism mostly. but its certainly true that people are becoming dumber, not just through AI (which realistically was only released in 2022) but social media shortening attention spans and addiction to immediate gratification through the like button.

FFS, wind yer necks in chaps. Its a workbench, not a dam, or a space rocket, so there will always be several different ways to do things, and all of them will be fine (probably)

Thing with this forum, is that you can get different ideas and opinions, and ideas you may not have thought of, and somewhere within that, and find a solution that suits.

Edit. For my part I would rather have the ideas and opinions of those who have practical experience, rather that an AI bot

My 'limited intelligence' response is, use bigger bolts. It's not just about bolt shear strength . Thread strength , thus clamping force is useful to clamp the bolted steel together to make it all rigid though friction. But as said previously, without seeing the construction, it's a hard one to call.

Will M6 bolts be strong enough for this job?
The frame will be made from 40x40x4mm mild steel angle, with 2 bolts going through each piece of angle to hold it together.

You could also design the top frame and legs so they sit inside the angle frame, all the bolts will be doing then is retaining the legs in position.

As for "AI" - we're going all out for "AI" at work, our main boss is calling for our "AI Strategy".

So we will be using "Actual Intelligence"
