My best tip is to go to Google and type in diy belt sander. Do you actually mean belt sander or do you want a belt grinder? Here's how to do it.

hehe its a belt sander im after.
I did google it but i thought id have more luck hearing from someone who has done it on this forum rather than follow a guide from a web page. Lots of handy people on here who id trust a bit more than an unvouched for random.

single speed . slacken the belts of with the end adjusters and the belt slips off the oposite side to the pulleys .quick to change

i didnt know there was a standard
like everything else it depends on what your requirements are. i had a 3ft wide belt sander offered cheap but no real use to methe artfull-codger

Langy if you could show what you made that would be spot on.
Mine would need to be about 2 to 3 feet long and maybe 20 to 30cm wide for what i need it for which is finishing hurling sticks.
Ive been just using a grinder with a sanding disc attachement but its just not really fit for purpose as there is no give in the backing plate like you would get in the middle of a belt sander.

Not a chance mate, I will get some pics when i go to my other workshop as thats where i keep it, I used a 2hp 3phase motor on mine.

So you want a grinder a yard long by 8" to 12" wide and general consensus on belt grinder/sander builds is that you need 1hp per 2" of belt width so theoretically you need at least a 4hp motor if you want to lean on it at all
