no criminal is going to get a flyer ID or do a test, same goes for any wrong doing by a flyer who just plainly does not give a fcck..just like the bally clad scrots on motorcross through the town centres. yet again its the law abidding who has to pay the price. New laws wont make the skys safer and the drugs will still be getting dropped into secure units.

As I understand it, you will need a flyer ID and an operator ID. Cost of the latter is £11.79 per year. My kids have about 6 small/toy drones and I will need to register as the operator (over 18) but they will need to take the flyer ID test even though they are under 13.

I think you had to have flying id and flying license before, I actually just renewed mine as it lapsed a few months back - I’ve got a little dji mini se and I did the theory part when I got it, so for most people with the camera type drones I don’t think anything’s changed.

I specifically purchased small drones with no cameras (didn't want the kids using my smart phone) but we were gifted another drone with another cheap and cheerful camera that I decided fell into the "toy" drone category.

The point you made is I believe correct.

The remote ID broadcast requirement is already in effect here in the US. I have an older DJI drone without that capability, which has been gathering dust for a while, but I just purchased a low-cost remote ID broadcast module that can be attached to the drone. The drone is already registered, but I still have to register the remote broadcast module and assign it to the drone. I was considering buying a new drone, but my old DJI drone still does a decent job and has some nice features, including 4K video, so I should be able to get some more mileage out of it.

I hold an FAA Part 107 Commercial Remote Pilot Certificate, but it's been a couple of years since I did the required recurrent training/testing, so it needs to be renewed. I'm planning to review the latest study guide, which is a couple hundred pages in length, including sample tests.

To obtain my original commercial certificate, I studied for several days and then went to an FAA-approved facility to take a proctored and timed exam, which was, IIRC, two hours in length. Fortunately, once you obtain a Part 107 commercial certificate, they allow it to be renewed every two years via a fairly short online training session and a quiz, which is quite convenient.

The material isn't all that difficult, but there's quite a bit to remember. It was easier for me than for many people, as I already have a private pilot license, and even though I haven't flown a plane for quite a number of years, there's a good deal of overlap in exam content between flying a drone and flying an airplane, and a lot of it came back to me.

If my enthusiasm perks up enough, I might consider upgrading to a fancier drone. We'll see...
