Watching my neighbour fix his car today, got me thinking.

On drum brakes you have the cap, spring and pin assembly that hold the shoes flat to the back plate.

I had a tool to make life simple when fixing the cap to the pin and spring.

I can not recall what they are call, nor can I find my set, any one able to help.

The parts are circled in red.

Had this for a while and handy as just re lined my rear brakes, it helps to be able to see when pin and washer are lined up.

Slip joint pliers, although I do have access to the proper girling tool, which is on the end of the handle of the brake springs removal tool, which I've used in the last couple of weeks. I prefer the slip joint pliers though

Same as I use. Previously used pliers but doing most of my repairs on the driveway the cursing at volume was getting a bit too much when the cap and spring would fly off so bought the proper tool and much less curtain twitching now.

I have one of those, but this summer, working on the Tacoma rear brakes, the O.D. was too large,
and no matter how much I pushed and shoved, no go.

The O.D. of the tool was deflected by the shoe backing.

Ended up using Vice grip small needle nose locking pliers, the jaws worked great to hold the cup.

Just ordered a Sealy replacement set, should be with me in 48 hours.

Just miffed that I lost my original set.

Found out, yesterday, the parts supplier I use. Now supply the springs, those pins etc for every set of shoes they sell.
Out with the old and in with the new.

I once was asked to fit a set of parking brake shoes on an old Mercedes , got a new set of shoes from a local motor factors but when I went to fit them all of the springs etc had rusted almost to breaking. I tried getting a fitting kit without any luck so ended up ringing the main dealer who told me they only supplied the fitting kit along with new shoes which I ended up buying. The new genuine shoes with fittings , were cheaper than the pattern parts without

Also some motor factors sell “Super sets” bu Mintex?assembled with all fittings, adjusters and wheel cylinders which at times can be useful

Had similar on a set of 205 drive shafts. Main dealer was 30% cheaper than Partco.
