Damp again looking for a quick fix

The new garage at home has two walls that are partially under ground.
I know a French drain is the correct method but that will have to wait until summer.
So a friend is lending me his big dehumidifier to try and dry it out a bit. Then what magic products have we used that have worked well?
I seem to remember @brightspark using something?

tank the wall using sbr bonding agent and ka tanking slurry, a big bucket of the internet 25kg for under 28 quid mix it up to a paste and paint it on it on with a stiff paint brush . a few coats

i wouldnt bother to be honest as your wasting money doing so

better off waiting until the french drain is done and then use the dehumidiifier

even with a drain in the wall will still be damp so it isnt a waste of time .i did a customers garage and it had been pi.ssing in, its used in pits and swimming pools ive tanked a couple of my house walls using it along with drilling the wall and injecting damp proof jelly. no problems after 5 years

Can you lower the ground level outside?

One place I looked at buying had a damp wall on the lounge - owners said it only started when next door built a raises flower bed on the other side of the wall.

the problem you have is the wall will still be wet, water will just build up behind it... so has to get out somewhere... probably down into the floor depending how it's built

same as you, I used it for a temporary bodge until I could go back and sort it properly


it's powder, you mixed it with water and paint it on, 2 coats, 1st coat you brush left to right, 2nd coat up and down (that's what the instructions said)

wall has to be wet when you put it on

I didn't use sbr... didn't know that was a thing... I'd have added it if I'd have known, seams like a good idea, tho mine worked perfectly without it

in that case I'd leave a dehumidifier running in there too....

set it to 40% humidity and it'll turn on/off keeping the place dry

I know lots of people who have them but don;t run them complaining about the electric cost... not realising the cost of the damage the damp is causing

Dont envy you..just come through a move myself which was epic on another scale regarding my machines and tools

I tanked my wet room using a couple of Aqua seal kits. Have a read of the Application Method / Tools. The method for similar products will likely be the same. This kit comes with specific primer but note how it says you can use SBR, echoing the comments above. Any moving cracks you'll need to tape ideally with tanking tape. Might too be an idea to do the wall / floor junction.

yep if the brickworks manky and mortar missing point it in you can make a paste slurry out of sbr and neat cement and paint the wall 1st one coat then use the tanking slurry with a bit of sbr mixed in job done ka have a help line if u need info and are very helpful theres u tube as well . forgot to say i tanked the garage floor that was well cracked as well every time it rained it came up and pis.sed in flooding the floor the punter was well happy with it

Another vote for KA tanking slurry

Did my pit 12yrs ago, went from 4' of water after heavy rain to bone dry

I did the walls and floor then had it rendered and tiled the floor

I've got a prefab sectional garage.

I did all the joints with and cement slurry. It works amazingly well.

And,.if you miss a bit (ie one joint still shows dampness after you've done it) you can just do it again over that joint. And again, if need be.


Ive used it as a tanking slurry too. Seems to work for that too.


To mix just keep chucking cement into sbr until it's as thick as you can get it but still paintable. Then paint it on.

Wash anything you care about well after allocation. There's no recovering brushes etc if you don't. Or buckets.

just one coat cement and sbr for a bonding coat 1st before doing the tanking slurry .any mortar missing or gaps just fill and level with a sand and cement mix 1st
