I assumed they were the original motors and pulleys as they were all identical. However, now I look at the speed chart again only 8 speeds are listed (for each mains frequency) which doesn't correspond with a five-step back-geared drill, for which you'd expect to see 10 speeds.

Yea most probably.

Could be they had the small pulley specified for drilling stainless. Or perhaps it way a simple case of they had 5 step pulleys where 4 of the steps here correct for the job.

0.55 kW is more than enough for most jobs on a back-geared drill. That's my experience anyway.

Larger motors will be d90 frame or similar, with correspondingly large spindles. 24mm won't be convenient to you.
