Depends on the make really. If you want a battery to last a very long time you need a good brand and (assuming it will physically fit) over-spec it. The battery in my Audi A4 is an Odyysey AGM and I put in the biggest one that would fit. But it’s not the budget option. The previous Odyssey I had was in a caravan and it was fine after 10 years when I sold the van.

But you’re right, the budget ones are build to a price, not a standard.

I suspect modern batteries are built down to a price.
But remember some vehicles will drain a battery constantly. Even when the ignition is off.

Even the alarm system being armed drains a lot more than you'd expect, battery life becomes weeks as opposed to months with just the immobiliser. That's how I ended up with a stone cold dead battery that needed rescuing lol.

Nowadays I just lock without arming and pull the battery, as the car sits around for quite a while between drives. Nothing on display inside worth smashing a window for, so touch wood nothing bad has happened yet. Everybody ignores car alarms anyway.

yes checked parasitic drain, etc etc , weekly 120 mile run , so not just local . Anyways they have deided to honour and refund being sent . finally ! just need to find decent make to re purchase.

I try to buy Yuasa where possible. Why? Made in Wales
Mate doesn't like them though - he delivers the lead ingots to them - right on the 44 ton limit - says he is down to 20mph on some of the roads around there

I try to buy Yuasa as well, mainly because they have always been good on my bikes so I use them in the cars as well, no complaints.

I've never used Tanya batteries myself, but over the years quite a number of my customers have purchased motorbike batteries from them.
Some were very good, & some were not so good, & had to be returned.

I think that one of the issues with such places is stock turnaround.
As the vast majority of batteries nowadays are factory commissioned. They start to degrade right from the off, & if they're not put into service, & lounge on the shelf for a few months, they'll certainly be below par when they're eventually sold. As opposed to the old lead acid batteries which were vacuum sealed, & had a shelf life of a couple of years, because they don't activate until one lobs the acid in them.

Motobatt are a popular brand of motorbike battery due to their slightly higher cranking amperage. I had a customer buy one which he asked me to fit. It had 10.2 volts in it. So it had obviously been lounging somewhere for quite some time. He had to send it back.
If I supply a Motobatt battery I get them from the importers, & have never had one arrive with less than 12.6 volts within. Due to the importers rotating stock properly.

I think that due to the cost/aggro of returning something as heavy as a battery it's better to purchase one locally. Then if a problem occurs it's easier to sort.
Fortunately for me I have a very good battery supplier quite local to me called CPC Batteries in Tolworth Surrey. I've used them for nearly 30 years, & have had very few batteries fail prematurely not least because they only stock decent brands of battery. It's also because they rotate their stock properly.

On another note. Has anyone here used the Duracell brand of car battery?
I've found them to be very good. I fitted one to my Transit van which gets used infrequently. It lasted 8 years, & was replaced with (you've guessed it). Another Duracell.
Last month I had to replace the battery on my Suzuki Vitara which is a 1600 petrol with all the stop/start ******. A new Duracell from CPC was just under £105 which I thought was pretty good.

I used plenty of Duracell branded "019" AGM battery (we had to fit AGM to Welsh Water backup Gens after they had a regular Lead-Acid blow up & injure someone. It'd make no real difference to the liklihood of an already rare event - constant trickle charging of batteries that are getting on a bit is the primary cause of failure & explosion, not the construction).

Had a surprising amount of failures actually. I saw nothing to say they live up to the small cell brand reputation tbh.

I have Tayna brand leisure batts x2 in my camper conversion. Probably only a year or so in, but so far OK.

My battery has failed, a Halford's one just overctwo years old. I've refitted the original, which was a replacement I bought in 2018 a year after biying the car, and it seems to be holding up remarkably well. A trip to Halford's tomorrow, methinks.

I won't deal with tayna anymore. I've learned the last few years that if you're buying something at risk of latent failure you want your warranty to be with someone you can actually visit if need be. It drastically reduces the risk of them fobbing you off and means no return postage . When I need batteries I just buy the yuasa silver ones from Halfords on my trade card. They might be 25 more expensive but the warranty is longer and there are lots of Halfords branches around.

I had a varta battery from tayna , 4 year warranty. At 3 years it got to the point it would rapidly run out of steam like totally dead after a short trip then a restart. They just fobbed me off and claimed that because it took a full charge on a charger and had good voltages it was fine...totally ignoring the principle of current. Never again!
