I thought some might be interested in a shed I have just built for a lad I went to school with, absolutely record build time! It went from a steel wagon delivering it in my yard to the first picture in 6 days! All the cutting punching and welding was done by me thou my YTS Boy done the painting!

It only took a day to put up, and timber, with a good team and 2 loadalls you want to be looking at a bay every 2 hours at very worst!

It will be a workshop/barn shortage

With a roller shutter door and small personnel door to the side

Last job for me was drop off some knee braces annnnd got the van well and truely stuck

Thats me done for this one! One day i will be able to afford my own

Do you not use cross braces in the roof or fenders bay.

Cross braces are in the roof and 4x knee braces went in today the end bay

fantastic space...how did that get past planning ? does it come under farm rules like storage for animals etc.

Unless things have changed Ag rules are you put in a 28 day notice of intention with plans, council have to respond within that time with a very good reason why you cant have it, On the 29th day you crack on. Rules changed a while back, if they can prove it was put up for non ag within seven years they can order its demolition.

Only applies to farms over 12 acres, under that you now need planning for everything.

We are metric now its 5 Hectares, and doesn't apply if you are National Park or AONB.

That will be described as a general purpose building! So much stuff getting stolen, its not unreasonable for farmers to want somewhere to keep it!

203x133 legs and 102x178? Rafters.
Right on the border of having to go the next size up really

What is the lifespan of a building like that? Given typical UK weather. Cumbria and Wales being pretty much equal

It really depends on the quality of the paint I think, at home we can feel the spray of the sea on a windy day so things rust BAD yet we have some sheds hear 20 years old that are just and so showing their age on the paint but timbers and sheets are still %100

I would like to think a well painted shed kept watertight will do 30 years before it needs a re sheet? And maybe 50-60 years overall

putting buildings up is immensely satisfying when it all comes together. We did 5 bays portal and purlins in a day last year, that was good going, but that was also well planned , used Z purlins with pre-punched holes.
The one before that was 3 bays portal and wooden purlins and it took 5 days, because we had to move columns and adjust steelwork because of both design problems and fabrication mistakes... only ourselves to blame for the fab though

Don't you galvanise them? A shed building neighbour here sends all the steels to Hereford for galv. Unless he's desperate for the work and will do the painting himself it's cheaper to galv them than genuinely cover his time for painting them even with a big spray setup.

For us, 10t of beams, it costs around £8k +/- £1k for galv, or around £4k for shotblast and paint. Even cheaper if you buy SB&P beams, red oxide the flanges/haunches, and then just top coat afterwards.
Some people want it, some don't.

The reality is, a painted portal frame will last a couple of generations as long as its kept dry.

Absolutely I have done 22 sheds now in 4 years and not all have been smooth sailing
Nothing….and I mean nothing will make you feel as silly as 3hired men, a customer ,2 hired in loadalls combined costing about £140 a hour all stood around looking at a set of rafters that are clearly 2” too long…because you forgot to minus the 4x faceplates out the steel calculations

been there... also I have tape measure dyslexia at least twice a year, sometimes it's on something important
