Skirting board decision

I've tiled the floor and putting the skirting boards back on - I need someone to make a design decision

1. Skirting on the front of the chimney breast as per left hand side, obviously notched around hearth.

2. No skirting to the front, as per right hand side.

I'll terminate the ends by doing a mitre either across the thickness of the board, or the height of the board.

Not at the front, much cleaner IMHO.
Then replace all that taunus shizzer with oak and may a kidney or tow

This is what I did,

Id stop at the edge of the slate with a mitre blunt end. Basically mitre back on itself and glue pin a small mitre on square to hide the end grain.

the one on the left with the right hand up to the edge mitered with a stop end and cut round the hearth

For mine I have no skirting at the side of the fireplace either. If you have no gaps to fill I feel it's neater.

I'd finish that on the side, with a verticle mitre.
Although the mitre across would help disguise the thickness of the skirting looking blunt.
Had to do that with mine as the corners of the chimney breast were slightly rounded.

If it's a wood burner, has to be 600 mm from fire.
This is what I did, and it's my house I'll decide how far wood is away from the fire!

I would agree, quite an elegant solution.

We have it on ours, because the hearth is about 5 inches smaller at each side than the breast. If the hearth was bigger I wouldn't have the skirting

I would either not go onto the chimney at all if your floor to chimney gaps are neat.

Or, go for the left option but obviously notch the bottom of the skirting to take the hearth.

I like the clean look, the skirting on the left just screams look at me whereas clean says look at my nice woodburner

Definitely needs skirting to the front otherwise it just looks unfinished imo several ways to terminate it , just return mitre back or return the moulded top section down .
