Starting an engine thats been parked up for 5 years

My friend has a td5 defender...

The rear wiper broke. I mentioned the gearbox grease... (not that that will "fix" it)

Anyway, he asked me what grease.

I said "whatever you use on the prop shafts"

...and then remembered his aversion to doing any car maintenance, so followed up by -

"I guess whoever serviced it last night have done them"


He replied -

"Serviced? It gets mot'd"

I managed to confirm that it had never been serviced in the whole time he has owned it.

I've known him about 9 or 10 years, and he had it before I met him.


In that time, however, I do know that it's had at least one oil filter change. At least, I assume they didn't fit his old filter to the new engine.

It's also had two new transfer boxes. So they won't be running on the original oil.

And one new gearbox. So that's that aspect taken care of also.


I did make him check the diffs once. They were full. I didn't realize, at that point, that they were full of the oil it was sold to him with.

yep , thats land rover reliability as Ive seen it too ,,, loads of gearboxes , transfer boxes , shafts etc etc ,,, but then they tell you its been reliable and nnever missed a beat ,,,, dont get me started ...lol
they really are like triggers broom ,,,,, if it had woodworm and loose bristles , and the nail that holds the head on keep falling out

Haha. No!! I've been too busy reading about how terrible land rovers are...! (I only have four at the moment so dont know why i need to hear it here!!)

D3 rear brakes (discs and pads), not sure if i need to do handbrake shoes - we dont use it if possible. And D2 FL hub ball joints need doing. Then I might have some time on the 110!

Then job for winter are both rear C pillar to sill/arches on an L322 that hasnt moved for a year.... why do I do it..!?!

I have always ran a mixed bag of 4x4’ s on the fleet, I have found the Landrover no better or worse than the jap offerings.I have had/got vehicles here with 300k on the clock, upside of the land rovers is they are dirt cheap and easy to keep running, They all have issues, jap spares are expensive and sometimes impossible to find, because of this I tend to throw a jap gearbox in the scrap vs repairing a Landrover unit. Keep oil levels where they need to be on any of the 4x4’s and they will bash on.

I bought my original 90 when my lwb petrol shogun needed new timing chains, at the time they were oem parts only and the price just for the chains and the guides was what I paid for the whole 90. Sure those days of cheap 90's have gone now, but the spares prices are still a similar situation.

Still got it must be getting on towards 20 years later, although I've put a new chassis + polybushes under it this year to save time welding in new crossmember (and regret this decision after buying a shielder, repairing what I had would have been a far quicker and easier route) and gone to 200tdi and lhd conversion while its blown apart, apart from that just axle rebuilds and seals and a new turbo when the original 19j one let go and caused a diesel runaway, for which the 19j itself survived although it rattled worse afterwards.
Terrible designs these landrovers, always breaking down. Anyway, better get back to cloning the engine ecu on daughters 207 which has just failed from water ingress because the ecm is mounted upside down with the connectors at the top, and when its raining the water runs through the scuttle onto the top of the battery box where it lives, filling it with water. Like apparently they regulary fail from and have to be scrapped because of the cost of doing the job at a garage.

If it turns over with a breaker bar and has been indoors it will be fine.

Check the oil level and Drain any water from the bulkhead fuel filter first. Only things likely to be wrong is the lift pump is US and /or there is now air in the fuel system and will take a bit of cranking over, but no bad thing as it will wake the oil up. A whiff of easy start will sort that out.

Once started change the oil to be on the safe side, but being a LR, best to just ignore that, so all the armchair experts can bang on about how unreliable they are.

Haha. Lift pump is an electric one so flick of a switch and it will pull the diesel through. Oil should be fine... there is none on the floor... and there was some in it...!

None on the floor ? Must be something wrong !

 

[Turbo]

181,000 miles on my ssangyong om662 so far with original timing chain. Checked it last year and it was under 1% stretch.

Does that use one of the old Mercedes diesel engines.
Noisy and underpowered but will keep going forever.
