My recent breakdown and OBD codes

Possibly not relevant, but something to check: I faffed around with a Peugeot partner 1.6 Hdi no-start for ages, looking all over the fuel system.

It was a stuck-open EGR valve. Unmetered air was entering, lowering the MAF signal and so fuel injection volume. I’m fairly sure I disconnected the MAF at one point, which should have eliminated that, but it didn’t help.

Thankfully this van being Euro 3, does not have EGR. Another reason that I want to keep it !

Glad you managed to get it started again. Sounds like that primer bulb could be the real issue. Those things leak just enough air to cause headaches. About the codes, some scanners list the newest ones on top, but not always. If they don’t show dates or order, it might just be random. I’d clear them all, run it, and see what comes back first.

I am a bit annoyed about it restarting TBH. I have not done or replaced anything yet for me to think its cured, so just waiting for it to happen again. I have cleared the codes, but nothing has come back yet, but I have not yet taken it back on the road.

glow plugs dont really become relevant in our climates in my experience...my td5 had them blanked off and it always astarted even in -5 the one year...

as for the codes, you ideally need to take it for a run and put it under pressure to see if the rail pressure codes come back, then check the primer bulb for bubbles coming through which would indicate the ingress of air signifying a problem either with, or before the primer bulb. my money would be on the bulb itself

Ive had to replace a fair few of those renault style primer assemblies over my ownership of various masters and other things. Currently my forklift is being naughty about starting without being reprimed until all the air is back out after a 3 year hiatus from the issue, and its already had a replacement filter head + button curing the same issue when I first got it, so that'll be 5 when I get round to it again. None of them are common rail era pumps, but they still need air free diesel to start properly. One that drove me mad only leaked occasionally, and it was just replaced as a guess after being annoyed by it for months but it fixed it.
I think the genuine renault and rotofil oem ones work really good for years until the diaphragm finally ruptures from old age and degredation, but the aftermarket copies are a bit less quality.

Used to be an issue on 205 diesels when the lucas filter/primer unit eventually failed. You could fit a cheaper aftermarket unit that failed in a year or 2 but it was better to fit the lucas one.

Might be there's a sensor that cuts the engine if there's a "fuel leak" detected....

I remember my diesel Volvo cutting out...when I read the code it pointed to a fuel leak shutoff....but it was actually caused by a partially blocked filter dropping the fuel pressure.

Basically the car saw the pressure drop and a safety shutoff was triggered even though there wasn't a leak!

Now there's a thought. I did replace the fuel cap a while ago because I had lost the key for the old one.

I will check how the tank is vented, I'm fairly sure it has an open pipe with a filter on it, but will check, might be causing a vacuum !

I am going to try this once the scaffolding is out. Been raining here most of the day and SWMBO has found other things for me to do, so not touched it today.

Will do it daylight with some tools. There is a good hill near here which is straight and more than a mile long. Often hear guys on MCs giving it the beans going up. 170 mph I'm told.

that would be the place to try...at least you know if it dies, you probably just need to prime the bulb again...or stick it neutral and roll back down

I would be pleased if it would do half of that !

An ex customer of mine had a TVR Cerbera, and reckoned he could do 180mph going up Best I managed was in a Mk2 Astra GTE at 140 indicated coming down. There is a roundabout at both ends, which spoils the fun a bit.

Td4? We had a couple of those. Sometimes the vac pipe would tragically fall off the EGR and plug itself with a screw…

Yeah 2.2 td4e...dpf been gutted and programmed out/emulated...think the cat has gone too and egr been sorted as well so effectively no emissions crap to worry about. Think it's been remapped as it surprised me when I test drove it but not 100% sure on that
