Every now and then I need to mark bits of metal with something that doesn't run off easily. I probably need to split my d3 propshaft and replace the centre bearing next and need to mark it so I can align it afterwards. What kind of markers are put there and suitable?

Center punch adjacent pieces, is all I do.

Another vote for centre punch or I some times use a cold chisel for the sides of mating faces before i undo anything

another for auto centre punch,
with things like con-rods or other multiple parts you can stamp No1 with one dot, No2 with 2 dots etc.
even done it with control linkages on excavators when you have loads going back to the valve chest, some hydraulic oil seems to dissolves most markers!

A paint marker will be fine for a prop shaft.
Even 2 bits of gaffa or masking tape.
You don't need to put the marks anywhere near the bits you are working in so no danger of them getting rubbed off.
Or just put one nut/bolt or cable ties in aligning holes on the end flanges.
With regards to the D3 propshaft specifically. Don't. Just buy a complete one.

Done them on my D3 and on the 4motion T5 van, did a whole "how to" thread on the T4&5 forum.
Not the nicest job, but doable,
T5 4motion you have to fully split the CV joint balls and all as some dumb bugger put the C clip inside, behind the joint that has to come off to remove the bearing.
I can't keep spanking £350 to £450 on a new propshaft when the rubber of the centre bearing fails and all else is good. I know cheaper aftermarket non branded ones exist but we do a lot of miles in this car. This one's done about 60k miles and the rubber hasn't perished enough to cause damage to the ujs yet but it's on its way. I figured, for a 35£ part I'd replace it before it fails and screws up other bits of the shaft.
I'm half tempted to just centralise the bearing in the carrier and then fill the perished rubber area with sikaflex ....
they are about 135 quid ,,, fitted loads of them. when you put time to them there is no sense in starting to strip them .
Non branded after market though? How have they lasted? Which would you recommend?
I got hit by Britpart level quality a lot with the defender so tend to avoid the cheap aftermarket bits. That said its a gkn prop that I'm complaining about with the centre bearing currently.

we got them from a local supplier branded , but I cant remember as what , monroe maybe , or qh , but they fit ,, had a warranty and caused no issues for maybe three years or so ,,,, just the same as oem.
Brit part .... Sh*t part ..
total garbage and a waste of time and money , very very little that they do is worth fitting

In a couple of places I've worked the metrology dept. used one of those to mark stuff like steel rules with asset/tracking numbers. I'm just looking at a steel rule imaginatively marked "SR003A"

I have a small Rolson hand engraver that works on 2 AA batteries and has a diamond tip.
It's brilliant to make alignment marks on stuff, I use it all the time.
