Scan and 3d print a steering wheel?

I think it would be worthwhile to get a pattern made of the 1911 Bowden Wire Co. cast alloy steering wheel before I get a wood rim fitted, just in case the welding does not hold up to use! it is around 14" dia and dished, I was thinking that it could be scanned and then enlarged by 10-12% to allow for shrinkage and then 3D printed to use as a foundry pattern if I ever need another. is that likely to be possible, expensive, waste of time? My wheel is shown on the left, held together with mole grips!

Perhaps PM old Davy or one of the other guys who play at making casts it's likely best done in a carving wood cut & glued up then Dremel'd smooth & shellacked to make the form etc.

At the very least, you could take enough dimensions to draw it up.

It could then be 3D printed, CNC machined, turned into a pattern, etc. to your heart's content.

I thought a 3D scan would be the easiest, cheapest way to save it, I started to make a wooden pattern from the dimensions taken from the 1906 Riley in Whitewebbs museum plus my old centre part but I decided it was way too much work!

Far better off biting the bullet and making the pattern from plywood and filler.

for something like that which is a pretty simple geometric shape it's easier to just draw one from scratch

it would take someone who knows what they're doing 15min to draw that in cad, an amateur less than an hour

take lots of measurements!

Wood or 3D print doesn’t really matter, either way you’re going to want as smooth a finish as you can.

A 3d scans more trouble than it’s worth for something that regular/radially symmetrical.
