Section roller problem

Hi all, does anyone have any clues what may be causing this scary banging? I haven't used my roller in a little while & fire it up today but soon turned it off!
Thanks for any suggestions. The chain seems ok

well the chain looks to be jumping the cog . id disconect it and turn the final drive cog on chain by hand to see if anything is binding and locking it up

I'd say one roller/shaft is binding up a bit. Looks like the whole thing could do with a little oil/grease.

Can you get the chain off without much fuss and spin them by hand, or take covers off to expose bearings/bushings...

Does it do the same if you reverse it?

A worn out sprocket probably or damaged tooth/teeth would be my guess, drop the chain off and inspect asap before any more damage is done.

Pull the driven gear off to inspect fully.

Thought it might...checked if it's fairly free running yet?
Got a chain tensioner on it? Is that jammed... chain well lubed and free moving between links? Getting too much slack by the looks of it.
Pulling one way fine, but the extra slack is creating the slap it appears... Can't quite make it out from the video.

or take it off lay it on a table and bend it sideways if it bends in to a fair ark its stretched but i dont think its that. it jumped the cog without any loading on it and the teeth would be arched if worn .somethings binding after the chain

Blow YT to full screen Scroll through to 17/.026 then step forward teeth are shot by the look of it, do it to 19/.026 in smallest steps, the damaged teeth are just coming off the chain and you can see the whip
It happens every second the .026 time is the one to watch,reckon more damage somewhere + chain stretch

Cheers all. Trying to progress other jobs so not had much time for this yet. The big wheel is held onto the smaller drive one by half a dozen 3/8 allen bolts, which are really obscured & tight, so getting them undone is a real pain.
A few years ago I did repair a link on the chain when it suddenly went BANG and broke one day, so the chain there is scope for the chain to be faulty. I really hope something becomes visually obvious as taking it all apart it tough...and filthy work!!!

Likely to be a link not moving correctly if that's the case, might even have put a bit of wear on the sprockets.

It's a lot of stress on that sort of machine when starting a roll, especially if you leave it set and feed lengths in. I managed to shred a big planetary gearbox on one years ago. I wasn't popular

If this is something more severe than just a worn link, where do I look to next? I have almost no engineering skills/knowledge.

It would actually quite quickly bring in a bigger question of, do I replace it? Mainly if it's something that requires a bespoke machined replacement part, as I don't own any of those kind of toys. I got this machine for £1000 a few years ago, so it's served me well, but it didn't cost so much that I MUST save it.

I certainly don't have the money at the minute to replace it with another 3 phase, more modern machine, as much as I'd like to. I have now seen a couple people using the Cyclops rollers off eBay in conjunction with pipe threaders to run them. Any other ideas??

I'll be sad if this is kaput, I've made some nice things with it.

As the others have mentioned, it sounds like it's binding up, it takes a lot of load to make a chain bang like that. The machine sounds (I think?, judging on a phone video ) like it's working under load between the chain jumps, suggesting somethings tight.
Again as others said, maybe take the chain off and find out if the shaft is free to turn.
A slack chain is possibly letting it jump, but it's not causing it to jump

It wouldn't be jumping with such force without any load, it should turn by hand.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's slightly bent and binding in the journals.

No idea, I didn't make it. I think I'm at least the 3rd owner as I know of 2 others who owned it before me.
The shaft would be solid bar of about 40mm round, wouldn't it?
Hopefully I'll get another crack at it tomorrow

I'm at a bit of a loss with all of this. I've dismantled it as much as I can, but nothing's freeing up. I even lifted the top half off to disengage the big wheel to see if I could get it off, but nothing budges.
The most I can tell is that the right hand side has play in the threads (but tightening things up does nothing), whilst the left hand side is tight. The gap between the big wheel and the right hand side varies & I think it binding up is what causes the jump.
All abit over my head / knowledge base, which is very frustrating. It's definitely the right hand side causing the problems because when I took the chain off it just runs the big wheel & the left hand side, and it moves ok.
The only roller that turns by hand is the top one, both the bottom ones are solid.

Where are you located?

I'm in south Kent. Had a crane engineer friend come round yesterday & give me a hand, it needs to be completely stripped apart if I knew for certain that spending more time on it would be a definite & easy fix, then I'd be inclined to see it through, but as it is I'm tempted to park it & get a Cyclops roller as it's becoming a time black hole. To get to the shaft & journals, I've got to cut through about 6 foot of 15mm plate welds as everything is hidden/welded shut.
