uPVC Door Lock

All I know is on another door I fixed elsewhere this type of handle is ideal. Snib lock I think it's called? If the door is unlocked by the key then as lock as the little snib lock is turned you can't open the door with the handle from either side.

Usually means the mech is worn and you need to use the key to get the last bit of movement to open the door. Replacing the lock or changing to thumb lock probably won't do anything.

You could roughly tell from the wear pattern and moving it about with the mech apart how much was worn. So I added more than I needed and filed to shape until it operated correctly.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, is it the case that with the door unlocked you cannot open the door by just turning the handle? i.e. the latch doesn't retract fully?

I have a "Latham" door. The thumb turn locks it from the inside as well as the key locking it.

Yes, correct, exactly that.

The caveat being, that ideally, with the door unlocked you'd only be able to open it via the inside handle. Not sure if that's even possible?

So most likely the mech is worn or less likely something has come out of place. One issue is as it's a front door, unless you have other access to the property and are able to secure the front door whilst you attempt a repair, if it goes wrong you will be left with an unsecured house. So you will want to find somewhere local that can supply a replacement at short notice and there are lots of variations in size/style

I've always known that type as a "slam lock" a locksmith put me onto them when mum started to get forgetful so we didn't have to worry about her forgetting to lock the door at night.

While I'm not a great liker of them wouldn't an outside number keysafe have resolved this?

Yes, had a keysafe, carers let themselves in, my mum then claims to have lost her keys and couldn't get out if she needed to in an emergency, so carers had to then leave the keys from the keysafe with her.

Meaning I then had to go down to let them in and find the other keys, or supply more.
