Why is ironwork on the roads and pavements a dark steel colour?

I noticed some checker plate on the way to the shop used as a cover fixed to the pavement. It has been there for years, out in all weathers, and was not the usual mild steel colour. It was dark grey and not rusted at all. Did it have a coating of some sort on it? Thanks.

Plus a coating of soot from traffic exhausts, dust from the rubber tyres and sundry other 'stuff' in the air.

It is likely to be polished but rusted mild steel if it is thin and press formed, polished by foot traffic ,

Unless it is 6 mm or more thick then it will be decking quality heavy galvanised checker plate often found over the barrel chutes into pub cellars.

Have you seen Corten after laying in the road and driven on ?

Or you only see it vertical on a bridge or building.

I know what he means - drain and manhole covers are the same. Not coated but also not rusted. Many don't get driven over.
