We stayed near Barnstaple last month and went to Ilfracombe one of the days and caught the RNLI practising.

They have some serious machinery

The tracked boat carrier has a neat trick, it can lift and rotate the boat 180° batmobile style.

Illfracombe harbour is odd to visit at low tide. Large commercial ferries & trawlers tie up at high tide and are left grounded at low tide.

Essex! Why….

Visiting family....I was senible and moved out years ago...

I'll agree the south and south west of the county leaves a lot to be desired, but there are some nice towns and plenty of pretty villages further out into Essex, many more than people think.

Just like any major city has it's surround areas that are crap, but there are always areas that people would like to live in, because they are regarded as better class...

Any part of Essex that has few inhabitants can be regarded as excellent, especially out on the marshes.
Always best to have a couple of dogs with you though, and preferably a Webley revolver as well.
While the vast skies, replete with stars, and the gentle sounds of the darkling Saxon Shore are yours, interloping malefactors can be summarily dispatched, and a fine breakfast of kippers cooked over driftwood be had at sunrise....

So he can enjoy the pure joy of leaving again.

Tbh there's good and bad in Essex, just the same as everywhere else really.

Take the cliff railway between Lynton and Lynmouth. Powered by filling a water tank on the top one then letting the water out of the tank on the bottom one. It's brilliant, and cheap!

If you go there, walk along the footpath past the Valley of the rocks hotel to the Valley of the rocks, watch out for the wild goats

I was made redundant in 91 and moved to Paglesham, I spent 2 years on the 'Rock n Roll', and was so far from Southend on Sea doll office (about 9 miles), I 'Signed On' by post, I only had to go to the doll office twice a year...during this time.

I lived there for 3 years in the early 90's, 3+ miles to the local shop, 1/2 mile from the local pub...3 buses a day in/out.

When we got snowed in one year the pub run a beer and food tab for the locals, ... until the local farmers cleared the road..

Sorry, my mistake, the shipwreck museum is above the shop at hartland quay. Not clovelly!

Well we’re off to a good start. Wandered around Barnstaple this afternoon, drifted into the pannier market and spied this little beauty for a tenner. Couldn’t say no! Turns out they’re still available new at £250! A move closer to my analogue only workshop (because I want to ok).

I was living near Bayeux around then, and the weather was notably warmer, even if the buses were vastly less frequent.
That having been said, the cheese section in the local supermarche was epic.....
