Thats definitely the plan, we might even visit as they are only about an hour away from us. this was just a first question really, is R-tech the only game in town or is there something comparable in terms of features/warranty/customer service and ease of getting into?

i have an empty garage with a workbench, 16a supply with dedicated dist board and fan ducted ventilation, so that should suffice?

ooh seems Parwelds TIG-212-Di seems to have the same goodness with higher amps than the rtech AC/DC 171. also you can buy it bare machine which is good as instead of the torch it comes with she can get CK 17? which seems a much better fit for the size of her hands.

Any downsides going Parweld over rtech with these machines apart from the big price difference?

Also is the a list of suppliers somewhere to buy steel that isnt expensive?

Just do a Google search for local steel stockholders - some will gladly sell you cheap off cuts etc...or some (maybe smaller) scrap yards will resell scrap metals ...

If she has small hands once up and running, look at water cooling and a w20 torch….night and day-at 200 amps to a w26

Thats probably the way forward, once I recover from the initial outlay.

It also seems there are differences between the rtech and the parweld, duty cycle which i doubt matters for this use case, lower amps start, and number of wave types, which i have no idea about but im sure they are there for a reason.

I've used these guys, down your way and were quite happy to do small orders and cut 6m lengths down to fit in the car.

You might want to take a look at Warrior Welders. I think they sell similar Chinese welders to Rtech.

You're right. I'm sure they used to sell TIG welders in the past.

Cheers for all the help. R-Tech are selling demo machines so the bullet was bitten and ended up with the 171 AC/DC, and some bits, namely mask, flow meter, filler, gloves and tungsten, i think thats enough for now and had to persuade the bank manager ill learn along side the girl...kinda toofa.

for now we have stuck with the standard torch until the wallet recovers but a 2 stage regulator is on the cards

lacking a bench grinder, is it ok to sharpen tungsten on an angle grinder? I also have a belt sander if thats better?

It's best to use a sharpening stone dedicated to tungsten electrodes, as contamination can adversely affect TIG welds, so best get into good habits, especially for aerospace.
