@roofman I was going to ask how long each piece should be. I'll look into just adding cover patches as of course that will be the best value way to do it (was going to say cheapest but nothing about roofs is cheap ) Does look like I have a way forwards at least and if the quote is reasonable my son may go for it for peace of mind.

I think it's call soldering I have actually done that many years ago but it was rather difficult to do, almost as difficult as joining a lead pipe to copper with a wiped joint which have also done a long time ago.

I'm no roofer but I'd fold it up, fit new under it (into the course of bricks under it) then fold it back down.

I think that folding it up would probably make it worse as the splits are quite bad. Cover patches as @roofman suggested are probably easier and more effective.

I've been up on the garage roof and found the root of the problem. It looks like the lead will have to be replaced as it's cracked/split in at least three places. The pointing on the lead into the wall is OK, could be better but not terrible. I still reckon it could do with being a bit longer down the roof as I measured the angle again and it was18 - 19 degrees so quite shallow. The work at the end of the wall is also a bit messy. I'll see what the quote is and if it's more than my son can afford straight away I'll probably bodge it with some Lead Mate and change the lot myself next summer as it's not in a challenging position.

If proper coded lead proves to expensive there are alternatives like Wakaflex, applied like your standard flash brands but better quality.

Lead or alternative, 350mm + wide should be used.

Using lead, installed and dressed properly is a one off in costs and shouldn't require doing again, alternatives will always need replacing at some point regardless of quality but quality of flashing brand and type does count and how it's applied.

That gable end no doubt takes a hammering in all weathers.

Wakaflex is good, it's forgiving but where you overlay on to the concrete tiles, 50-75mm up from the edge of the flashing I would use a thick bead of non-bitumen sealant to help hold flashing in place and prevent blowback/creep of any rain/water ingress.

seen as i have these you can actually resolder instead of buying new

but as roofman says you can split the lead easily enough along its length at the splits and move them over so they overlap just buy a small piece of lead just to finish off in the middle whilst overlapping the joints

but you will have to grind the pointing out the other thing you can do is alow the split and do a cover over of the split area with a new piece of lead at each crack point and grind out as well at those points

Don't worry I wasn't going to weld (solder) it. The slip joint you suggested makes perfect sense. The effects of thermal expansion are often underestimated and with the extremes of temperature we get nowadays it can only get worse.

@gaz1 I need to work out the best option as to whether to remove parts and add in new or slip joint. It all depends where the cracks are and how long the existing lengths are. A bit more investigation required

The roofer is coming in the morning so it will be interesting to hear what he has to say, along with the price of course.

100mm is not enough on the tiles with that shallow pitch IMO.

Would be interested to see if there is underfelt or membrane below the tile battens. Ideally it could be lapped up the wall a bit, under the lead.

You could ease the existing lead up, take off the top row of tiles, which may, or may not be fixed to the battens, and add a strip of membrane and refix.

Could even add a bead of lead mate along the edge of the lead to seal.

I expect the roofer will want cash, and escort you to the nearest ATM

Actually they are doing another small job for me on Friday, the sewer vent pipe flashing is leaking a bit as it's lifted round the edges. A real PITA to get at and I would have ended up in a snotty pile on the floor if I'd gone up there. Only charging £80 to do it which is a good price I reckon. We shall see what they quote for the garage

Thats alright then, there have been a few cases here of older people being had over by the good old boys who are apparently roofers.

One has to be a bit careful.

This is it. Good tradesmen rarely need to advertise, and certainly don't go round with hand delivered flyers. Not caravans so much here now, more static mobile homes.

your slip joints are already there due to expansion and contraction hence the reason for the lead splitting at certain points

all you need to do is patch over like roofman has already said over the cracks that are already there
