Exhaust wrap fitting tips?

With the manifold off my merc cossie at the moment and considering the scorching underbonnet temps, I am going to attempt Titanium wrapping the headers





I have fitted this stuff before to downpipes and applied it dry. But I see some reviews on amazon saying to dip it in warm water makes it easier to apply?

When I looked into it I heard wetting it makes a neater job, but sold the bike before buying any tape.

Soak it before fitting , use stainless cable ties to secure. It will smoke and stink when the engine is first run. Have you considered ceramic coating? I have no idea of price

I got a quote for ceramic coating and the cheapest type was around £300 + post each way. Its a heavy manifold and also valuable so I don't want to be posting it off.

get the right hand tool to tighten the ss ties...gets them much tighter than hand or plyers.

As others have said - soak it in advanced.
It makes it more pliable but the biggest benefit is it stops all the loose strands getting in the air and all over absolutely everything within a 3mile radius.

Make sure hands and arms are covered even when using the wet approach. You'll thank me for the night you don't spend up scratching

And don't start the car in a garage or enclosed space unless you want to create a sauna environment.
The best thing to do is start it and go for a run - it'll smoke (steam) off for ages but getting it all up to temp and getting the airflow over everything will speed up the process.

With the closeness of all the pieces, how practical is wrapping each individual pipe with a long length of tape?

The working part could not be rolled up as it would not pass through the gap; the entire length would need to be straight and passed through the gap starting at the dead end. So it might be a two person job - one to guide the end of the tape and the other to manage the slack.

Once one is done, the gap becomes smaller. Would the next one try to stick to the previous one (perhaps cling film could stop that)?

Even establishing the correct length to cut off the roll might be challenging unless a test run were done with some newspaper strips.

So best leave it then no wrap and get ceramic treated in the future? I dont want to ceramic treat it now as ive only had the car a few weeks and already spend nearly £2k on parts. So it'll wait until later for ceramic coating lots to get on with

I have taken exhaust wrap off to be met with sheets of rust.

That is what I am leaning towards now. A thorough degrease, light blast on the rusty areas and Halfrauds do a grey metallic VHT aerosol I may give it a couple light coats of that and let it cure overnight before fitting in the car.
