Put the bit of rag over the bed , I know it's naughty , but didnt want cast iron swarf all over the machine !

I use cardboard or paper. Much safer in my opinion. I have used newspapers, but never get them now.

As well as cardboard, I also hold a vacuum cleaner nozzle near the cutter to hopefully collect all the fine dust.

Started on the shaft for a short slide hammer (350mm overall without any adapters). Will be 16mm shaft with a 20mm head and (for now) and m12 thread (to accommodate 1 adapter that I already have). will eventually cut off the m12 and screwcut for m16 when I eventually make more adapters for it.

Two sheets of the crepe wide blue hand wipes aka emergency bog rolls are idea for laying over the bed when slightly damped if the job is bitty & dirty .

my 12" rotary table was missing a clamp and looked a bit of a faff to make but as I had the table out for another 'project' it made sense to have a crack at it

turned out to be not too tricky just lots of handle spinning



just need to drill a hole and job done , wish they all went this well !

Actually finished the rotary table clamp very rare as usually something to gets almost there and something else get started, Also made a handy lifting eye to screw into it for when i finally get round to building a jib crane over the mill as everything seems to be getting heavier just lately...

I know I usually take a while to do things but this is taking it a bit far even for me!

Back in February(!) I had a crack at turning up a parallel test bar. (Post 1827)

I’ve only used my lathe once since then, so I’m not sure why I decided to revisit the slightly pointless project now but that’s what I did.

So with a fixed centre fitted and turning up a headstock centre out of some better stock I set off at it again.

I took two passes after each time the tailstock was moved and actually engaged my brain for a change.

I was pleasantly surprised to get there in two moves of the tailstock.

Not the perfect useful diameter I envisaged back in February but about as parallel as I can measure. (Middle measure is the same)


I’m going to whisper this bit…I make the diameter 1.1198” give or take an impure thought but I’ll only whisper that in case someone who can actually read a mic hears me…

In any case it’s about time I actually get on with making something worthwhile!

Keep that bar in a capped at both ends kitchen sink waste pipe wrapped in a bit of oily rag .., that way when ever you move the tailstock across well used areas or off set it you can use a roller bearing in the tool post at right angles to the centre line to quickly redefine the trueness ,. I have an 8 inch , bar a 14 inch bar and a 20 bar specifically for this purpose . . each in its own tube .


It took me ages to get it right because I didn't realise that the QCTP was actually rotating a smidgeon on the tool post , all because some " gentle man " had use a smaller standard hex headed bolt to pull the tool post block to the crossslide instead of the correct sized T nut and it caused it to grow a micro mole hill that stopped the QCTP tool holder block seating squarely on the cross slide . i scraped it flat & Fizzy machined the QCTP to a true squareness on parallel opposite faces .

Fired up the Myford today for the 1st time in ages. I'd forgotten how quiet and civilised it sounds compared to the gear head Harrison. Used it to turn down the toolpost stud for the Harrison after I bought a new qctp from Arceurotrade in their sale to replace the Dickson toolpost. The groving/parting tool and inserts I got from Aliexpress worked well also.

I'm a self taught happy potcher when it comes to milling stuff, have done usual make stuff square and put holes in it.

1st time with a rotary table

This is a 3d print of what I'm trying to make



1st attempt, its not finished as I've made some mistakes, not sure if I'm going to scrap it or try and persevere



The dimensions aren't critical but it moved twice when clamped to the rotary table which has messed up the dimensions

To get the radius I'm using a HSS 15mm radius cutter, loads of chatter and vibration so been taking light cuts

Gonna leave it for now and ponder what to do

That’s a hefty cut to be doing on a turret mill. Light cuts are probably making it worse.
The way to decrease chatter is more feed, less speed. So bigger cuts, slower spindle speed, faster feed or a combination of all three. Unfortunately turret mills aren’t the most rigid.

More clampage will help stop a little chatter too and obviously stop it moving about.

Centre pin probably yes, addional side bracing unlikely as its tight on space the the current clamps

After it moved the 2nd time, I changed the orientation on the rotary table and its stayed put since
