1940s lorrie/truck

Well I did it again. Today I acquired a 1940s Chevrolet cmp c8a four wheel drive truck (or lorrie on your side of the pond)
..the cab is in pretty rough shape but otherwise descent condition. It starts and moves under its own power,it has a hi/low transfer case and a pto on the side of the transmission that drives a hydraulic pump by a short drive shaft.
The problem I’m having is I can’t get the pto turning to drive the pump.
Does anyone have any experience with this type of rig?i need to put the drivetrain in neutral in order to drive the pto with the gearbox and clutch? I’ve used a lot of pto driven accessories in my day but this one got me scratching my head.

so does the PTO not work ever or only when in neutral....
if it's the latter I'd suggest thats normal for that age of truck....
Hyd's and PTO have been upgraded a lot since 1940....
and in that kinda year only military vehicle's would PTO's be the norm...

So as far as I can figure,you must put the transfer case in neutral so you can engage a gear in the transmission to drive the pto which will drive the pump to operate the hydraulics by means of the clutch of course

That's how I remember them, but they can be left engaged, because I worked at a garage doing police recovery in the 1970's and the boss built a crane on an Austin Gypsy with a pto driven winch. He was so keen to use it, so first time out he went and hooked up the wreck, and started back home. Seemed to get slower during the journey, and a glance in the interior mirror showed the front bumper of the casualty climbing over the tip of the jib of the crane because he'd left the PTO engaged......
Oh my, how we laughed! I don't remember him ever using it again.

That could be a great project truck. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding chassis/drivetrain parts for it, as the CMP chassis were used for so many different vehicles, and a LOT of them were made. As to the operation of the PTO, I'd have to do some checking, as I'm not sure if it would be the same procedure as on my Dodge M37 (which currently doesn't have a PTO, but I'm planning to add a PTO attachment and winch).
