Garage door ideas

Hopefully moving early 26.
The new garage has an old up and over door, I was thinking of changing it for a roller shutter are they more secure?
I felt it would give me more inside space as the up and over rails wouldn't be in the way any more?
Issue I have is can I put a Judas gate in a small roller shutter as I don't want to open the whole door to prying eyes every time I go in and out?

I went for sectional, which look better and apparently more secure. Headroom is also better than roller type.

My garage has roller doors. Wanted insulated rollers. For workshop.

Don’t bother with electrical ones.
No end of greif with them.

Got double cables, they jump and jam.
One on single cable, Other just can’t get it back on

i allway thought up and over doors took the least amount of space

also added benift 2 blocks of wood sliped on the inside low down gives a big advantage of stoping the door opening

roller shutters and sectional doors are not securer whilst both have there uses they do secure within reason

whilst 2 hinged steel doors can be really secure depending on what you do with them

in the long run its up to you how secure you make them and if you make up a double steel door with more secure references

a next door to other half parents was out side trying to get in to his garage the string had failed

i went over with a ruler pushed the top of the door back sliped the ruler in the top in the middle and rocked the door a bit while pushing the ruler and it opened in seconds

same day he called out a guy got it fixed as he had a lot of surf borads in there worth a lot of money the 2nd day on my advice he had a piece of wood screwed over the top edge and painted to stop any one doing what i did to open it

I like the sectional insulated doors, had one in my last place. If there is no other access to-the garage and you dont want prying eyes, Id suggest hinged, traditional style doors.

As for security a sthil saw opens most garage doors.

Have 2 steel barn doors, 2/3 -1/3 , steel frame, double skin insulated, powder coated. Replaced an up and over so gained a load of space.

Someone locally was away & he had a call to say a cat had been locked in his garage, had anyone got a key. The next door neighbours tried theirs & managed to open it, then found out they could open the rest on the estate. Either cheap locks, or they were all the same.

I intend changing the 8' wide up and over door on my garage to a three section side hinged - bi fold on one side and single that will be an access door. The sections will be angle iron and infill with T & G timber. Yet another "roundtuit" !

Neighbour came back from holiday and realised they had lost their house key. As I had a spare locking handle for the garage door that could be fitted I offered to drill the existing one out so they could get into the house via the garage. Just took a split second to open the lock and reckon a screwdriver held with "Mole" wrench would have done the same job

yeah exact same issue

you can thermal bridge most of the door

but you would need to weld some box section on around your locks and a stop for you bolts as well handles for those bolts

you can fit insulation inside of it and then another over this so it bridges over onto the metal door cant do nothing with whats there already



then clip its edges with this

or use aluminium angle and bolt through to the steel door remeber the edger must be smaller so dosnt touch the steel the rest just bolt and washer...

We had a Horman electric roller fitted about 8 years ago. Insulated. No issues with it whatsoever. I use the natural shelf above it for storage of long light stuff too - might help with your space question.

I fitted a roller shutter to the man cave extension, its got the manual chain and a motor, only just got the motor working. I know they can have jockey doors fitted but they don’t roll so that would limit lifted height. It’s as strong/secure if not stronger that the building itself attached to.

Make a “box” for the chain to live in.

Put isolating up/down switch in a ‘daft’ place.

No one will get door open easily if they break in.

Just means having to drive your prized car through the door instead

My shed cum bike store cum workspace has barn doors that close into an angle iron frame. Clad in thick tantalise fencing pavings that are bolted through the box section frame.
I made a big sliding bar inside a box that is the "bolt" that has a box where you reach under to fit the combination padlock (rather like the barriers on Forest Tracks).
It's not impenetrable cos nothing is.... but someone would need to make quite a racket for quite a while to get in there - which is about all you can do realistically.

For security any door can ultimately defeated its just a matter of how many more seconds it takes.

So in terms of increasing security I suggest motion sensor cameras with app notifications internally to the garage and externally. Alarm system with app notifications or live monitoring - extended from house system. I am now thinking of also adding the "blaster" really loud sirens inside my garage so any would be thieves also feel very uncomfortable if they do get in!
