Rover Gas Turbine 10202

Hello all, I've just done a rather silly thing.

I have bought a Rover gas turbine, it's a Mk10202 Airborne Auxiliary Power Unit. These were fitted to the Armstrong Whitworth Argosy transport aircraft.

I have the relevant AP topic 1 and 6 which gives a lot of info about the engine.

I would be interested to hear from anyone here who has any info on these engines, be it, technical or just reminiscences.

That's the 1S60/ The MK10301 was used in the Vulcan and the Rover/BRM race car. Revs at 45,000 rpm and in the car ran a 15:1 reduction gear.

I did efficiency tests on one in the engine test bay at RAF Halton whilst on my apprenticeship circa 1978. Noisy b45t4rd things.

What on earth have you bought one of those for?!!!

Excellent choice sir, easy to get running as a standalone! I have a feeling they’re the same turbine used in the ground power units and the rover turbine fire pump (which despite my hatred of stationary engines, I’d absolutely love for its ridiculousness) if you have a gander at the historic aero engines group on Facebook there’s a lot of very knowledgeable folk. Incidentally my old boss fitted one to a monkey bike years ago in a homemade sidecar……

They were used as power plants for RN emergency fire pumps.

It is fun when they start up and a baby tiff tries to take a picture, from behind.

Used them a few times as a fire pump, quite remarkable little things. Bloody heavy to lump around over hatches etc, but they can’t have shift some water.

Usually a 2 man start, if you’re feeling strong then you can manage it by yourself. They take some cranking to get up to speed, then flick over the fuel switch and away they go.

All good fun when I was in my younger years, not sure I’d want to play around with one now, putting my socks on is quite a challenge nowadays

The CND boat people would turn around when we started them up.

No idea why, not like we had gallons of Ox blood to play with. Was it now?

MWitA was not impressed by the noise levels when I started it.
Sold on for a small profit.

There was, I think it carried the reg no. JET1. Pretty sure it's in the museum at Gaydon.

There was, it was marketed in (I think) India where they ran it on whiskey to prove a point

used one a couple of times they were also used as an Army emergency water pump , they could fill a portable water tank faster than two fire tenders could drain one ,,,, mighty bit of kit ,

Yes, and a P6 version as well. The suspension design criteria was to provide the ability to install it, which also improved its crash safety as a consequence in conventional use.
