Disposal of Dog Medicine

As you know one of our dogs recently passed away.
We have some medicine left over some sealed some part used blister packs, other than returning them to the vet does any one know of a better route?
Its a shame to throw this away as its so expensive.

Sorry to hear that. The right answer is to return them to your vets, especially if they’re controlled drugs. Some animal charities might accept them for free clinics or overseas aid work. However, most people stuff them into ‘that’ kitchen drawer for a decade or two. What do you have?

Flea and wormer, Steroids, pain killers anti sickness.
She was in hospital in Edinburgh for 5 weeks was recovering slowly but then went down with something else. Best dog we have ever had only 6

Sorry for your loss, we gave all our medication to an animal charity, I thinknit may have been PDSA

If your pooch was suffering from a specific condition and there's facebook or similar groups for that condition, offer them up there.
one of ours who's sadly gone now was having ongoing meds, and someone very kindly sent us a very good supply of the exact same meds, which saved quite a bit of cash over a period.
I'd certainly try and steer any spare meds in the direction of someone it would actually help.

I'd start by contacting local dog shelters with a list of what you have and see if they're interested.

You have my sympathies. Best advice I can give is stick it out, and soon the pain of loss will fade and you’ll be left with a smile or two at the memories of owning her.

Re: the drugs, it sounds like you have other dogs. Flea and wormer could be used on them, after double-checking dose.

Steroids, presumably prednisolone - gone are the days when we would take 10mg to ease a hangover… PDSA or whoever if you’re feeling charitable. They are technically POM-V so swapping between non-vets is a bit shaky legally.

Painkillers - meloxicam? May come in handy for your other dogs, just as you might keep ibuprofen in a drawer.

Anti-sickness - metoclopramide? A bit specialist for keeping around. PDSA.

With all above, do ring and check usage first. Any vet worth their salt should give their advice freely under such circumdstances.
