single phase motor running backwards

I have been spoilt with 3 phase
Some idiot - not me - wired up one of my surface grinders and the motor runs backwards. How do I change it over? I know it's not as simple as just swapping 2 wires like on 3 phase.

I replaced both caps as it wasn't running properly. Just rocking back and forth. Now runs perfectly - just the wrong way. I wired caps in exactly as they came out of course!

First things first, get some crimps on the power cable terminations to get rid of those careless whiskers!

Already sorted those whiskers!

Normally it's just a matter of swapping the run windings over so that the polarity is changed....assuming you know from that connector block where the run windings are
Alternatively just swap the start winding connectors over - that will work as well (but don't swap both start and run together!)

What he just said!
Swap the connectors over on the ends of either the start or run windings but not both.
You can use a meter to id the 2 sets of windings but if it has a centrifugal switch you'll not get continuity on the start windings.

I know what you mean about 3 phase motors being simpler. I cut my teeth on 3 phase motors in industry but it took me a few years to work out single phase ones.

I have to say the camera on my Samsung S24 Ultra is incredibly sharp! No flash and poor light.

My experience with single phase motors is to leave the caps connected in there current positions and change the position of the links to the position marked in black on the following picture.
Make sure the live is connected to one link and the neutral to the other link.

Yes, swap the start windings around Vince, after removing the whiskers, you don't want stray whiskers poking out...

After disconnecting the motor from the power supply, before you touch any terminals make sure that the capacitors are fully discharged by bridging the terminals from the capacitors across with an insulated screwdriver. I was glad I did this once as the 'crack' and blue spark was scarey.

First take all the wires off to see where they go, shuffle and forget what went where.
