Yes it is. Very much needed. It is a Morse Taper 4 like my Triumph but the barrel looks like a cannon bored out for .22What a beauty!
Is that a handle to wind the tailstock along with?

Except when you try to move it. I have it on big rollers and it is munching up my warehouse floor in some placesIt does have a certain charm.![]()
Ah, you need proper concrete for a proper lathe!Except when you try to move it. I have it on big rollers and it is munching up my warehouse floor in some places![]()
The HIAB lorry floor didn't like it either.Ah, you need proper concrete for a proper lathe!
She'd probably go straight through my garage floor, if she'd fit in at all!
You never know with old stuff, just keep a search on lathe steadies, and have the picture saved ready to cross check - maybe one will turn up. People don't use them for years sometimes, but when you do they are invaluable. Anyway, you allways have your Triumph if you need to turn a long piece accurately....A nice copy of the original brochure. Mine comes with the taper turner but sadly nothing else. Steadies will be unobtanium. Talk about Karma though. About 2 months ago I bought a huge 4 jaw chuck on Ebay to sell on. Badly listed so picked it up cheap as chips. A D1-8 fitting. I thought I will never get a lathe big enough to need this
MT4 hole looks tiny. They could easily have made it a 5 or 6.
Bunch of weirdo’sJoin the holbrook group Fizzy ...some very well informed and helpful folk ..slightly jealous

There’s toolroom with tiny spindles and there’s this . Don’t be fooled by the name, it’s got Herbert dna and that means it was designed to work hardThe trouble with making the tailstock taper too big is the the temptation to put, for example, a 3 1/4" diameter Morse 5 drill in it. On a toolroom lathe, that is just not cricket.
Yes it is very sad really. A Myford would sell for double! As many have discovered, There is a lot of heavy iron out there at pocket money prices if I had the room I would have a shed full.
Holly old thread resurrection, sorryI bought this because it was very rare and cheap. TBH if I had seen how massive it was I would have left it where it was! I mean it is only 40" between centres - can't be that big can it?
First lathe I have ever been inspired to name. Matilda. Can anyone guess why?
Although this is badged up as a Holbrook H17 it is actually the H20 with a swing of 10" over the bed.. Weight around 5000kg or perhaps more. Tailstock alone has got to be 300kg. Makes my poor little Triumph look like a Myford
I was lucky I got a backload with a HIAB lorry. Even though it was an 18 ton HIAB he couldn't get it out far on reach so we had fun getting it inside. Assisted by my very good friend Peter.
I thought I had bought a lemon so haven't been in the mood to post until now. Headstock was very noisy - cross slide had massive amounts of play. less than 1hr of TLC sorted all that. Swapped the phases around - headstock whisper quiet now even at 1000rpm. Cross slide needed adjusted and cleaning. No wear in the bed at all. New belts fitted and it runs like a Rolls Royce.

When Herberts bought out Holbrook they asked the question - why are we selling lathes and advertising them undersized. The H13 became the H15. The H15 became the H17 and the H17 became the H20. I will measure to be safe of courseHolly old thread resurrection, sorry
We have one of these 17” Holbrooks at my job and no matter how I measure only 17” will fit.
I haven’t been near a 20” Holbrook since the nineties and remember it swinging the same as a mastiff ? So is your machine a anomaly
