Industrial heritage in UK

Hello. I'm planning coming back to the UK to enjoy your industrial heritage. (In case I got holiday)

I already have been to London, Liverpool, Manchester, York, Leeds and Sheffield. What other areas do you think is worth visit?

Birmingham. There are 9 industrial heritage museums in Birmingham. Actually not strictly true, but there is a website which may help plan your visit: http://birminghamheritage.org.uk/

The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and the Science Museum, are both worth a visit. It seems that some of the other museums and collections aren't open for visitors.

Birmingham Science Museum is now Think Tank and it's been dumbed down so much, it's like a playgroup for three year olds with interactive displays that don't work. and all of the stuff that made it good when it was in Elkington's plating works building in Newall street, Stuffed into one corner and forgotten about. And it's also VERY expensive to get in. !

My partner has just reminded me about Cosford. Now that is a good museum.

I was born in Handsworth in Birmingham. The heritage there is being slowly eroded. But if it's a choice between the past or getting your bins emptied? ....oh wait!

I used to love going round the science museum so had to go round the think tank when they opened it, what a disappointment

I think the fact that the originally science museum site was gifted with a covenant that it should always be free to visitors caused Birmingham city council to close it so they could open a money making replacement.

Plus they held the steamer gatherings outside on bank holidays.

My dad took me and my brother to see them putting the 'city of Birmingham' loco in. I tried so very hard to get time off work when they took it out, but couldn't. The contractors were on the news trying to work out how to get it out. They originally took part of the front wall out and winched it in.

Although I've never been (but would like to) I've heard that the Belfast shipyard that build Titanic is highly recommended, the pump room/house in particular.

It used to move forward and back a few feet using a hydraulic cylinder underneath.

York actively discourages any manufacturing in the centre, coffee shops, cafes, fast food, posh flats and hotels are where it's at now.

"The Cocolateworks" is just Terry's chocolate factory turned into flats..

Shame really, growing up and working in York, knowing the local businesses and seeing how it's turned out..

Perhaps consider Cornwall for the tin and clay mining.

Beamish is a world famous open air museum, telling the story of life in North East England during the 1820s, 1900s, 1940s and 1950s.

Is well worth a visit…there is many other things not too far away too

I've been to both BCLM and Beamish. Now, Bearing in mind that I'm a historical interpreter (re-enactor) so I know how the staff should behave. BCLM staff are arrogant, rude and treat the public as an inconvenience. Beamish, staff on the other had are friendly, pleasant and treat the public with respect. I know which one I would visit again.
