You've never run a manual VTL.

Probing, shear ability to rotate the job to clock in, jog the head (or the elevating rail) up or down, that one also has the ability to load the job away from the head and then move it over under the head.

They are an absolutely different beast to a lathe. A cnc one is 100x faster than a manual, especially as all the manual ones you'll find at 60 years old and run on ancient old gearboxes and transfer cases or if you're really fancy 50 years old and run on hydraulics.

I think you would need a pick are to move the depth of crud.

100%. The only time a manual lathe is faster is when you have a "quick little job". Something big like the OP's job, hogging out is way faster with CNC.

I could beat that running the Bullard dynatrol I used to run as an apprentice.

Main boring bar on end working turret, side head taking cut on O.D.
I used 1" IC x 3/8" thick inserts with a large nose radius (simple neg rake triangles)
3/8" deep cut (on the radius, 3/4" dia. each pass) on each tool at the same time, inside bore and
outside.
chips raining off beautifully.

I am not understanding what that has that to do with rapids for positioning and returns, that is the big time saver on a CNC.

Right and how long does it take you to manually move the tool into position accurately for the final pass? CNC can take the same depth of cuts as you can on a manual lathe but doesn't need to slow down to read dials or DROs to get into final position. That's where the time saving is as @Hood says it'll move between passes as quickly as the machine allows and hit the target position every time as fast as the machine can move.

total disclaimer: never worked CNC stuff, but I've stood next to it and watched it work

I've no idea how you think you can keep up with CNC for pretty much anything

on equivalent machines you're both taking the same depth of cut, using the same tools, have the same power available etc.

unless you're comparing vastly different machine power?
