do you have somewhere to charge?
my g/f has a 2016 hybrid golf, it's really really nice to drive
does 24miles on a charge in summer, 20 in winter (longer if you drive nice, less if you drive fast)
can't say enough about how nice it is to drive.... and as soon as the battery gets low the engine starts and you keep going
if she has a heavy foot they're really quick when you push it 200hp with engine and electric, nice for a quick overtake
(if you're on electric and floor it the engine starts up and joins in, in the blink of an eye)
I think the newer ones have much better range too, she's had hers a few years now, it's been totally faultless

Motorway are offering around 3K Clutch will be £6-800 cam belt £4-500, its straight tidy car apart from that. What are Hyundai i20's like?
She likes a higher seating position but doesn't want big car

Mate in work has a 2017 bmw x1 with a diesel in it, have driven a few times to take it to or from site for him and it's nice to drive, good on fuel and I believe it's cheap to tax as well
The vehicle mentioned has a DPF [diesel particulate filter] and these do not self clean with short journey usage. Any chance you can it take for an "Italian tune up" on motorway to see if you get a DPF regeneration that cleans the DPF and perhaps rules this out as a problem?
what year are you after? plenty around under 10k
but... no point in hybrid unless you can charge it
here's is economical on a run... not not worth the extra cost over a straight petrol/diesel car without charging

I can charge for free at work but its a 22mile round trip so not worth it.
She rarely does over 6000 miles a year

son had a i20 was a nice car but was 2012 and was a few years ago so dont know what the newer stuff is like

sister in law has a kia picanto which is basically a hyundai i10 and seems nice enough for what it is. i would imagine the i20 is going to be the same sort of usual standard that the mass produced shopping trolleys provide these days.

the dash was very plastic and looked it as well but you dont look at that when your driving there a to b cars not for show

ive found that in a lot of modern cars, even higher end mercs and bmws, they all look plasticy and cheap...im currently after changing my jag and cant find much that takes my fancy so will probably end up with another hilux or a ranger as atleast they are useful even if they arent as nice to be in
Why not buy another golf?
With your low mileage I would suggest a petrol to avoid DPF issues.
If you want something smaller a Polo is equally as good.
We have been buying Toyotas for many years and they were bulletproof and very reliable.
Last one we had was poorer build quality and felt very cheap inside.
Last time we changed we needed an automatic and our car dealer couldn't source a Toyota auto. He suggested we try a Golf auto he had and after a test drive we were sold on it. We had the solid feel of the older Toyotas and it was superb to drive.
It would take a very special car to get me away from a Golf in the future!

At 6k annual mileage & I imagine short journeys a modern diesel is IMO a bit of a liability.
My OH does similar mileage & drives one of the last of the mk2 Kia Rio 1.4 petrols (2011) similar mileage to the OP's Golf.
It's not as good on fuel, but it's relatively low price (£3100 8-years ago with 35k miles on it) and its to-date reliability makes it motoring for an annual spend that's tough to beat.
If its got to go, then I'd be in the market for a petrol replacement (but none of the newer flimsy 3-cylinder engines - a proper 4-cyl).
