To understand what? I understand that non native species are causing issues. I also agree that something needs to be done. What I don't agree with is the method. Wiping out a species by cold blooded murder is typical because it is cheap and of course "animals' lives are worthless". There are other ways, proven ways such as contraception which I believe has been trialled but found "uneconomic".

We have a completely different outlook on hedgehogs here in NZ.

The local eradication group place test strips in my garden and when they record a hedgehog I get the trap dropped off.
It is quick and efficient.

It is the right thing to do, when you look at the damage done by introducing alien species contraception just doesnt make sense.
I am participating in the Wildlife recovery trust mink trapping project, the aim is to eradicate them from the UK. Traps are fitted with a Remoti unit that phones you whenever its triggered, trapper or volunteer can then attend & dispatch. If we dont do this the water vole will go the same way as the dodo.

Back to hedgehogs apart from the motor car the prime predator of hedgehogs are badgers, now i love badgers but in many areas their population levels are at an all time high, here in south essex we have probably the highest population of Badgers in the country, but the hedgehogs have gone, last one i saw live was 5 years ago. It isnt sensible to have artificially high numbers of predators, Badgers, Foxes, they need to be controlled to keep their population healthy. Cruelty doesnt come into it.

Hedgehogs NZ I get and can understand, and feel the same way about Grey Squirrels.
Greys are killing off our Reds, and we need to do something about it, just as NZ and Aus are doing with the various invaders.

We've become quite sanitised when it comes to culling and protection of our native animals. Packet meats in supermarkets have protected people from the truth about fluffy, bouncy lambs being chopped up and served on a Sunday. I have never and will never eat Lamb.
There's lots that could be said.
Having fed my dogs raw for the last 15+ years, I manage to do it with much that our butcher considers rubbish.
There are a lot of things I can no longer get because it's deemed unsafe. If you want to give your dogs a real treat, order a pig or lamb 'pluck' (but not at Tesco's meat counter) they're cheap, they'll also make a lot of people squeamish. Lung, liver, trachea, and if you're lucky, esophagus and tongue, and all the connecting bits in between. YUMMY!

Well done on the rescue, we love our hogs and have recently been blessed with one in the garden!

Every day I ride up to my local cafe, past a field full of sheep. The baby lambs appeared about a month or two ago and I’ve basically seen them grow up day by day, from skinny little white things, tottering about on shaky legs, to running behind mum, to jumping and bouncing around.
I don’t think i could ever eat lamb again.

I have hedgehogs come into my garden, but the dog hates them and it’s hard keeping them out of his way, even fencing him off from the ‘wilding’ area I made doesn’t stop them getting into his area occasionally. With sad results usually.

A bloke i know was in One million years BC that starred Raquel Welch, the film was shot in Ibiza & he was on the hippy trail at the time, he found himself in a bar & was having a quiet drink when some film bods came in looking for extras, the guy took one look at his long hair & beard & said "Hey son do you want to be in a movie!"
And so he wrestled a stuffed crocodile in a pond, the hippy was replaced by a small boiler suit clad in skins which a real crocodile ripped up.
What a 5 minutes of fame!

I worked with chap who was one of three Royal Marines who were technical advisers on the film "the longest day", he made a couple of brief appearances in the background as an extra.

He told us of his involvement in the raid on Limbang so often we could almost recite it

There were many species of native birds, plants, trees and reptiles now extinct from the effects of humans on the landscape, bringing in mammals and birds of their own and killing and harvesting flora and fauna for food, for construction, for export.

Mitten Crabs, Parrakeets, signal crayfish, Etc, Etc ,Etc the list for the UK invasive species is quite long, but no where near as bad as NZ & Aus.
spent some time in Paraparaumu in NZ with friends and went to kapiti island to see the Kiwi in the wild, thanks to Hedgehogs, Possums, weasels. Stoats, Cats, rats and even polecats, nearly all the ground nesting/flightless birds are extinct or close to it.
quite sad that every where the empire went, trouble was sure to follow!

@indy4x well done of rescuing the little hoglet, my other half used to help at Hedgehog sanctuary and rescued & looked after many,

Pram beach out to Kapiti Island. I’ve never been, Mana island is down the way and also a sanctuary.

Kapiti island is pest free due to eradication teams who killed every pest, pretty cool. Possum fur makes beautiful gloves and woollens when blended with merino. They’re succeeding in Miramar making the peninsular pest free, too. Glad you had a nice time here, NZ is a weird old place!
