Hedgehog Rescue

Popped to a work site this evening where a mate wanted me to look at the worklights on his digger

While there I could hear some high pitched screeching. Had a wander round the site and spotted this little lady wandering around



Spoke to a local hedgehog rescue place and scooped her up and took her to them

She's fairly young, teeth were just starting to show and weighed about 140g



They confirmed she was dehydrated and a little cold but should be OK. Have left her in their care.

Had a good look round for her mum and siblings before heading off to the rescue centre but sadly couldn't find them. Popped back to the site about 21:30 and had another good look round but still no sign of them. Just hope they are OK

i know there a pest on local wildlife over there but there dying out over here cant you get them shipped over

Glad you got the Hedgehog to the care it needed.

On the Hebrides Hedgehogs are not a native species.
(Didn't get there before the rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age closed the land bridges).
Someone released Hedgehogs in 1974.
They have thrived and are endangering various ground nesting birds.
So now places such as South Uist have an export trade of Hedgehogs being relocated to the Mainland.

And extremely wicked. I would have thought with your proximity to Australia that the lessons would have been learned about interfering with Nature, besides the cruelty aspect which so few seem to consider important.

No, apparently it was us that took them over there and they are now considered pests, hence the culling.

I've been back several times and no sighting of mum and siblings, will go back again later this evening and leave some water and food


Also going to borrow a thermal imaging scope off my FIL and see if that picks up anything when everything has cooled down

Mitten Crabs, Parrakeets, signal crayfish, Etc, Etc ,Etc the list for the UK invasive species is quite long, but no where near as bad as NZ & Aus.
spent some time in Paraparaumu in NZ with friends and went to kapiti island to see the Kiwi in the wild, thanks to Hedgehogs, Possums, weasels. Stoats, Cats, rats and even polecats, nearly all the ground nesting/flightless birds are extinct or close to it.
quite sad that every where the empire went, trouble was sure to follow!

Yes in hindsight the worst invasive species was probably us expanding our empire

same as rabbits taken over to ozz millions of em . pythons in the everglades kane toads and a host of other none native species causing havoc

They caused the indigenous animals and plants to be nearly wiped out

Not forgetting the Varroa mite and now the Asian Hornet. Both seriously affecting Apis mellifera colonies

we get help removing the Varroa from the hives, there is quite a symbiotic relationship with bees & ants.
Asian hornets predate everything that same size and smaller than them, they are a real threat to most insect species

When NZ was colonised the colonisers bought home with them.
Flora and Fauna and the country is still suffering.
The climate is a lot more agreeable
