My biking passion began when i left school in 1975. In recent years my attention turned to bikes of that era, especially restoring them.
Many of them have spoked wheels and tubed tyres.
When fitting tyres i would often nip the tube causing a puncture. I tried all the tricks, partial inflation, talcum/chalk dust, lube the bead, and bead pushed right down into the well, without total success.
Never a problem with tubeless tyres, i fit those without a problem.
Anyway, I discovered a specific type of lever which has totally solved the problem. Sometimes called michelin type levers they have a raised portion near the lip which controls the movement of the lever. The lever rolls over the rim with the bead but is prevented from going too deep. Gives far more control. My first use was a revelation. Two new tyres fitted with no nipping and less effort & stress. Highly recommended.
