Cheap 3D scanners?

Is there a cheap / domestic user level 3D scanner or phone app anyone knows of that works well for creating 3D scans of an object you want to print please?

For a newbie getting into 3D modelling printing!

For example if a small part needs copied the ability to scan it and generate a model for printing.

Good luck with that. I spent £700 on a scanner and it is always quicker, easier and more accurate to model a part from scratch, in my experience.

As per @ajlelectronics points out, a scanner will just generate a surface file, you then have to reverse engineer the part CAD.
Have done a bit of that in the past when cad files have got lost.

I my job I have full auto desk licenses. That includes ReCap Pro so I may have a play with that and see if I can scan, model and print simple small objects.

Nope, not me. Only thing I have used is the camera on my laser to trace a part but it is only 2D and not that great.

I have looked briefly and its important to check if your phone has lidar scanning capability. Or the photos alone can create them.

Kiri engine is one such phone app with this capability I just tried it. Needs min 20 photos aroind the object similar to ReCap.

They work ok for organic shapes.
I've done gorses feet with them and that works for me as I don't need sub mm accuracy.

Handheld ones are a bit like cmm arms, it's operating techniques that determine the accuracy and the repeatability.

I'm sure I've seen threads on here of a cow (maybe a horse brass?) and a dog model.
Ideal for stuff like that as that's going to take forever to draw in a cad package (I'd think?)


Another option is AI. Upload a load of photos, tell it the scale. It will spit you out an stl file to print.

Got a revopoint pop2 personally, and use a crealitly raptor at work.

Both work and can assist when used within their limits.

Scanned the front wings of a seat ibiza for a wide body kit to be developed.

+1 for Kiri Engine. We have had a Sense Scanner from 3D Systems for years and have recently acquired a Creality Otter. Both scanners are a pain in the btm and we struggle to get acceptable results with either of them. The best results we have got is with the free version of Kiri Engine.

Small car parts and brackets that sort of thing. Nothing overly complex or large

I don't have any direct experience but there's.a bunch of reviews for the Creality Raptor 3D scanner on gaztube that makes it look really interesting.

Depends on your interpretation of "cheap" but the £1,159 asking price seems incredibly cheap for what it can do, but too expensive for me.

I've got the Creality Lizard scanner. I bought it thinking I would find more use for it, but despite having scanned a few things, it doesn't come out very often. Keep meaning to sell it but haven't got round to it.

They have their uses, mainly organic or compound curved parts/items. Take this model propeller... it's 6" diameter...


The scan looks quite good and it's picked out the "T" moulded on the blade.


But it's not good enough to print directly from (the edges are poorly defined) and needs reverse engineering. However it does provide sectional data and with the use of a plan view photos can be reconstructed.





The white mark is scanning spray residue - required on this black object with the Revopoint POP2.

I think a friend in Belgium / Sweden has just got a Creality one (that name rings a bell, I'll have to dig up the forum post) and it's been pretty decent. He scanned the rear end of a P38 and got very good results from it.
