Hi all.
Bit of an odd one. I am really hoping someone who knows can help....
I trained as a mechanical engineer back in the 90s and still build small steam locos as a hobby. I have a small MIG at home and I can weld but not professionally.
My professional work revolves around electronic equipment that I install and maintain - no welding...nothing like it.
My employers have taken on a job that requires making several wheeled frames with a lifting mechansim inside that lifts an 80kg loudspeaker 2m into the air. I have found out that these devices would come under LOLER. I have been asked to make these but currently I'm refusing on the basis that I am not experienced or competent to do so. There is also no design, I am supposed to simply figure it out.
At work, we have no welding station, no LEV, no PPE other than a small hand held face mask.
My employers are of the opinion that I should just get on with it on the basis I know how to weld. Another colleague has made a start and made a total hash of it and now it seems that lack of money in the budget pot for this project is driving the decisions.
I fear that I would be liable should someone get injured from using these things (not only that I couldn't live with it if someone got hurt)
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm leaning towards digging my heels in and refusing.
Cheers
