Couple of issues I am having.....

My pal loaned me a Transit Connect while my car is in dock. Very kind of him but I am becoming extremely nervous/concerned. At the slightest hint of acceleration the thing whistles like a Bosuns parade. Takes no real effort to keep it up right the way through to seventy. If nothing else, it's very disconcerting and I am worried that if this is the onset of "very bad news" it will turn into another bill I neither want nor can afford right now:-(

Any and all suggestions would be welcome.

Joking aside, sounds more like a leaking pipe off the turbo.

Ford's do like a boost leak...would be my first easy thing to check...

Personally though, I'd ask him 'how longs it been making that noise?' To make sure he knows you know it was already like that

First of the last model (2012- 22)?
PSA engine, which I'd be wary of whistling noises from, as that's the engines renowned for turbo issues if not maintained very well.

The PSA DW12 was quite a good lump, depends on what power level it has as to what turbo was fitted.
Sounds most like boost leak, look for pipe between Turbo and intercooler. is it chucking out any black smoke?
Check air filter box,
The reason it may not be the original engine, its about the right age for the Turkish timing chain tensioner fiasco.

Personally would had van back and go hire something.

That era of the 1.4/6 PSA engine didn't have timing chains, they were belt in Connects.

The big issue was oil galleries getting blocked due to soot/carbon buildup, which is why Ford put in an additional oil change only service,c compared to PSA service schedules.
Usual first sign of issues was the turbo failing due to oil starvation.
