Sliding Glass Door

Hi All
I was wondering did any of ye know how to make a sliding glass door that will fit on a small stainless steel model train display case. I would like the door to split in the half so it could slide each way. The size of the door is 700 x 180
I dont have a mill and I can get the glass in any thickness. The frame will be made from 20mm box section.

Door works like this one.

in the glass trade the width is first so based on that it's 700 wide, if it's 700 high & 180 wide you'll have to be carefull of tilting when opening, if I were doing it [cheaply] I'd use hemo track it's a double u section plastic with the top track deeper than the bottom so you can lift it in & drop on the bottom track, you can smooth off all the edges [arrising off] eith an oil stone & glue on a couple of glass strips 2"x1/2" for sliding them, if it's less then 800mm from the ground it should really be toughened or laminated safety glass. If you want a ''posh'' job you need proper aluminium sliding gear [££££££s] ask for ''clean cut edges'' at the glass merchants, hope this helps.

This is a vivarium I built for our lizard.The frame was built out of marine ply and the double u track was glued on.I had the glass cut to size locally and they also polished the edges and drilled some holes for knobs.
Mr Gruber the blue tongued skink is asleep on the slab on the left!

i was working in a flat the other week. there was a 6 ft python in the tank . i took it out and went near the lads with it and put the sh .,.,,.ts up em ive never seen anyone move so fast while they were having there break

Where do you get this track for the glass or whats it called.

I think I've seen the plastic stuff in B&Q in the rack where they sell the super expensive flat steel, aluminium etc.? I'm sure this wouldn't be a cheap way to buy it but might be convenient if you only need a couple of lengths.

I tried them and they told me if I want that product, go over to th uk an get it. Anyone know someone who sells this online.

I think you can search for bhole glass products that is the company most glass trade uses

I'd have thought its not difficult to obtain U channel plastic from any DIY shop

Most companies that do double glazing should be able to help out with upper and lower tracks.

I have used some secondary double glazing track in aluminium in the past.

I'm in Ireland over west. I think I found some 6mm u channel. So I am going to get two of those,weld them together and weld them onto the frame.
