Anyone know about CAV injector pumps?

Got a leak on the tractor.

It's coming up past the shaft for the stop lever.

These are the details of the pump. It's on a perkins engine in a MF690 tractor.

It's a small leak but its making a mess on the concrete street where the tractor is stored.

I'm guessing there's a seal on the shaft perished.

I want to take the top cover off the pump but I don't want a load of things going flying if I do that. The throttle and stop lever pass through the cover so I guess there are linkages under the cover.

Any advice?

It's not normally the stop lever that leaks, so it could just be the seal.
It's usually the throttle lever that leaks, as the cover/shaft wears.

It's been a while since I changed one, but as wyn mentions, nothing should fly out.
Just be careful as you lift the cover off. The exact configuration inside varies, so best if you ease the cover up so you can look through the gap, and check the position of the various levers/arms (I seem to remember some will have a spring you need to unhook, but not all).

This is a pic when I stripped one down on a JCB. Nothing should ping off I don’t think.

I'm pretty certain the leak is factory fitted...
There are O rings which might be the culprit, but there is a chance the shaft and bore in the housing will be well worn too.

CAV pumps are relatively simple.
I did have an original CAV workshop manual for them, but I have no idea where it is just now.

Interesting fact is the centrifugal pump technology developed and used by CAV in those pumps, was licensed by Bosch as late the 00's for use in electronically controlled pumps, as it provided better performance/control/durability than the alternative roller piston pumps.

CAV has ultimately been swallowed up by Delphi, but any diesel injector/pump repairer should be able to get you the correct bits, however independent overhauler are a dying thing.

PF Jones should be able to supply the required bits, or there was another often recommended overhauled, however I've forgotten their name.

CAV has been swallowed up by Delphi for sure.

My understanding is - Delphi has dropped any support for Rotary pumps. So any OE parts needed will have to be lying about on parts dept shelves or you not getting them...

You in the pattern parts market - and not everything is availiable for everything....

I have this I digitized into a pdf a few years back. I rebuilt the 4 cylinder cav dpa pump for my jcb 4/98 from two wrecked ones using it, though I have a 38dt with a simms inline pump in currently as the 4/98 has other issues that I have never found time or inclination to cure and go through the grief of changing the engine back, which is a shame as the 38dt shakes like a wacker plate in comparison and runs nowhere near as nice as the 4/98 did...

Here ya go, I laid out my pump on fresh paper for the rebuild and cleaned everything really well, you have to be careful and methodical but its possible to diy it if you do end up going further in at some point.
Mine had sheared the vanes off the original pump after debris got inside and destroyed quite a lot of very precise parts, so I got the smashed bits out the second broken pump I had to hand that had other issues...

Simple job, take the nuts off both stop and throttle levers, take the bolts out that hold the top on and gently lift lid off at the same time teasing the throttle/ stop shaft down. The seals are normally a temporary fix, it’s usually more to do with a worn housing bush. All as cheap as chips to do properly.

I'm only going to do enough to stop the leak. The tractor only gets used a few weeks in the year and is running ok so no need for a full pump rebuild.

I had a feeling you would be familiar with this repair!

In the video he takes off the lid complete and unhooks the spring. But he had the pump removed and I think trying to unhook and reconnect that spring with the pump on the tractor would be a nightmare.

I like your method better.
