Custom half shafts - supplier?

Geoff Berrisford, of GB engineering, is no more. He used to do custom halfshafts. He'll be missed.

I would like to get a set made for a little project, between CV joints and a LSD on the front of my 101.

Anyone know of anyone else doing this work?

Good. I thought that BM only did drive shafts, not halfshafts. I'll ask them.

I should say that I have used BM and they were excellent. They cocked up my propshaft and remade it and delivered it to my door in record time.

When I did my themed van, due to ‘Thick Steve’ not listening, he cut and welded drive shaft 20MM too short.

He did it by spending all morning making each half of the driveshaft and the 20MM chunk into ‘pencils’. Then piece of angle iron.

Touch sofa, 5 years and 5500 miles later still ok.

There is a guy in Feltham that can spline the shafts, it would be down to you to spec material and sort out the hardening. Currently having a brain fart but the name will come back to me, normally happens about three in the morning

For clarity, I understand halfshafts to be single piece shafts between the diff and the flange, or CV/UJ on a live axle. I think BM do drive shafts, just not half shafts.

An old boy in a shed near Jobs dairy on the 361, I was going around in circles trying to get some cut, when I finally got to take them there he said it must be the same ones he has had a dozen calls on.Pretty sure most of the splines that get cut around here are done by him via others

Had similar recently for a modified steering rack, hundreds of shafts shortened and re-splined by a good Engineer and he retired. The finished racks were snapped by those in the know but the tooling? No interest.

It is, with the way current employment law is you would never convince the owner in a small shop/cottage industry to take on an apprentice/trainee and pass on skills. Costs/rules of are prohibitive, most yoof are on job avoidance schemes until they get into mid twenties. We had the brain drain, we now have the skills drain.

But in reality, what sort of market would there be?

Not massive I would suggest. So paying a proper wage for that apprentice, even a keen one, especially when he becomes an ex-apprentice would be hard work. And if you aren't paying a proper wage, or indeed, even if you are, how does that ex-apprentice buy the business, buildings, machinery etc, knowing its going to be long time in debt?

And if you bung the price up to sensible levels to support a young person in debt . . . all you will get it complaints that the old guy didn't charge that for his, and the bloke down the pub said his mate just cut n shut and welded some up for someone and they've been fine in a 5000bhp monster the last half-century . . .
