Paton ProMIG250 15-2 5th Gen Review

What I like:
Genuine binzel torch
Huge wire feed motor (80w)
Surprisingly compact size for 250a
removable stick/tig power supply
Takes 15kg spools
comes with rollers for 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 wire
Intuitive dual displays that are quickly adjusted with the encoders especially with gloves on
16 programmable settings

What could be better:
torch is only 3m
paint job isn't amazing
Gas quick release is difficult to get to without removing power supply unit.

A longer torch shouldn't break the bank and a short gas hose extension would solve two of those and who cares about paint.

I'm very impressed with the power and functionality for the price and size but I haven't used mid range or pro level machines before. Most definitely a better welder than I.

If you've got anything specific you want me to try or take pictures of lmk.

I've a R-Tech 250A multi process machine thats works well but has no pulse and it can only take 5kg rolls so I quite fancy an upgrade but it's hard to justify to myself.

I thought they had a 4 roller wire feed system?
Does this version have a full mig pulse feature?
What are the syngeneic lines like? (They are pointless on my R-tech)

Are you sure pal? i was quietly looking at those for the 240v 250 amps I thought they catered for 5kg to 15kg

Think they do a 2 and a 4 version...long torch prob best with the 4wd!

The power knob (instead of push buttons) looks like a very useful improvement...I didn't like the push buttons at all.

Mine is an older version and can only take 5kg rolls

I did make a holder to take 15kg rolls. It works but it's not ideal.

Today I made a contraption to see if I can get 15kg rolls to work on my mig.
The idea came from @gordon stephenson who has something similar on his mig. (I think)

I've an Rtech MTS250 and it takes 5kg rolls of wire.
It's a 250 amp mig and can burn a 5kg roll in short order.
Also I wanted to try dual shield mig and I have a few part rolls which are also 15kgs.
This is just proof of concept, because if the feed mechanism isn’t up to it, it's not worth pursuing.
Started with couple of bits of 40mm angle and flat bar.

Turned down a 10mm bolt and an old skateboard wheel to...

I paid nearly £40 for a 5kg roll of Chinese wire yesterday and that's more that I normally pay for 15kg.
My own fault for not keeping a spare but it's starting to annoy me.

I don't think this machine is synergic at all. Doesn't bother me because I'm used to reading a chart.
Pulse on the other hand is beyond me atm but yes full single pulse mig with up to 320a peak.

I´m looking at the paton pro 250 5-2 and my questions are:
1- its the same motor that equips the 15-2? At glance i think so and if so you can make a small diy to make the 18kg spool fit.
2- the pulse mode- what kind of pulse? single, double???
3- the tig lift mode as i read has improved i think we dont need anymore the v(valve) tig torch the machine handles the pre and pos gas.

From that i can find the is :
-A new 32 bits arm processor against the old 8 bit risc one
-There is a 2t and 4 t tig lift mode

On the down side
-It cost more than the older version
- To soon to see if it is as good as the older version
-How many of us have a dedicated 32 amp single line instalation?
-If you dont need a 15kg spool wire because the wire rusts you may get the cheaper standart version 5kg and 2 rolls

Are they now stocked in the UK? I did fire over an email to paton uk regarding the 250amp a couple of months back but it seemed id still have to wait two weeks for it being shipped to uk.

I should really sell mine ...it was bought specifically for a job I had in mind that never got started. I've run a few rods using the stick mode and I have to say it really ran beautifully compared to my old stick welders which is why I was hanging onto it.

Not used the mig it Tig yet. I do like the build quality with Paton ..at least with my version the cables are like something used to charge my EV!

non synergic single pulse
probably need to have your wits about you to set it up.

I ran 150amps on it from a 13a plug so you could buy now and use it and upgrade your supply later.

I'll have another look at the tig settings when I've next got it out.

It takes 5kg rolls no problem I've got one in it rn.

I think they work this way:
1- The unit is built in ukraine
2- Shipped to poland (european market)
3- exported to the uk were they join with a local enterprise who services any welder that is not working right. Cutting any cost of sending the machine back to poland and them resending back to the uk. Maybe they even then they are forced to send the machine to ukraine, but from a cost perspetive the have a E.U. repair shop.
