Keensert help

This is a requests for some help.

So I have bought a new gearbox, however unfortunately when buying i didn't check some of them mounting threads and they are damaged. Some tit has used loctite on the steel bolts into the aluminum gearbox housing, then made a mess of trying to retap it

So basically my pain to repair is drill out and use solid thread inset same as keensert. However I'm very much struggling to find stock of them anywhere.

So my question is would anyone have a m10 keensert hd so would be a m16x1.5 outer.

If that's M10, then M16 would surely be too close to the edges of that boss? Although I thought an M10 keensert was M14?

Would a simple helicoil not work?

The external thread on an M10 Std is M14 and on the HD it's M16

Has anyone watched the Torque Test Channel on thread inserts?
Made me rethink buying £300 of Wurth inserts.

I'd consider getting the side cut/ground out of that hole, then TIG weld up the hole and redrill/rethread.

There's very little meat around that after drilling out to accept a Keensert in that casting.....

or possibly use a normal Heli-coil and stud lock a stud in, depending on what (bracket?) is attached to it?

I cant see that needing any more than a helicoil either, lengthwise maybe go 1.5xd or 2xd just to be on the safe side. It will be stronger/more durable than the original thread in ali.

Being a tight ****, I'd probably be thinking about simply drilling and tapping that out to the next size, winding a screw in with permanent threadlock, cutting it off, and then drilling and tapping to suit.

Or just tapping next size up and opening the hole out to suit in the mating part.

Do they still the see-through paper catalogue?

Brought my first one back to the UK in 1999. If it wasn't in the catalogue, you pretty much couldn't get it!

I know we buy stuff from them - but we might do it through our US arm. Colleague wanted some short lengths of metric keyed shaft - cheaper, and quicker, to buy it from McMaster than anywhere in the UK.

For the amount this gearbox cost im not taking any chances and have used the keenserts before in work for critical items and habe worked flawlessly that's my reasoning otherwise I would

Unfortunately some tit has had a go at repairing and it was originally m10 then they've knackered an m12 and stripped threads so I think I'd endup repairing to m14 and ideally would like to get it back to correct size. Understand helicoil ok icd used them in work to hold some things im ashamed of haha but used the keenserts and seem a far superior job just like to be doubly sure

Hole looks decving as its alreay 13mm so realistically only drilliing out another 1.5mm and then tapping so there should be plenty of meat aswell as not sure how happy id feel chopping up my expensive new gearbox.

This is 1 of 4 mounting bolts used so should be no issues with support seeing as its 1 of 3 mounts holding engine and box

If space is tight, I might consider filling the damaged hole with Lumiweld followed by drilling and tapping? Otherwise, a simple helicoil job.

How are you going to fit an M10 helicoil into a 13mm hole?, Drill size is 10.3mm...

A Trisert in M10 would need a 13-13.5mm hole but looking at that photo there is a ring of crud/previous repair around the hole so I can see why he is thinking of a keensert with a 16mm thread and that would probably be the best repair option.

Welding it up and re-doing the m10 hole from scratch would be great but you need to locate the new hole center accurately somehow.
You also have the issue of knowing what grade Alloy the gearbox is made from as you could end up with a load of molten blobs..

I'd say a well-installed keensert would be better than a poor weld repair any day.

could you drill it to the next size and tap it , say m14 for arguments sake and get a stepped m14 to m10 stud made to suit and locktite it in , keeps things more or less original and would be fast and painless

I could do that but realistically when the option is there to install a solid thread repair inserts like a keensert id far rather do that and have it back to oem spec especially as I think having a stud there would be a pain in neck for ever having to remove the mount that will be on it in situ in the car
