York 2.4 4AA - horrendous engine - near impossible to get started on a cold morning.

York made a six cylinder version of this I think (3500cc...?)

My Dad had a MkII Granada with a 2.1 Peugeot diesel engine in from the factory at about the same time. Dad called this Granada - "the slow pig".


This was at the time when not all petrol stations sold diesel. Takes some getting your head around that fact. May go full circle in my lifetime - petrol only at the pumps.

Brought back some very, very bad memories of towing one up the road, regularly, at two in the morning to get it started, once started we never turned it off until the job was finished at around 9.00am Couldn't tow with it either, not empty anyway. Needed plenty of weight in the back or the towed vehicle was going to be steering you.

They also increased your blood pressure by a significant amount.

You needed to have the engine spinning before you pressed the pump or it would just lock it up.

bought myself a new'sh car. bought a nissan juke 22 , 1.0 ltr model.
it has a chain driven belt instead of wet belt and only 20,000
ideal car for us as we only do about 6,000 miles a year ,mostly local and occasion whitby or york during winter.
I did consider the hybrid but wife doesn't want auto.

Don't take it the wrong way but they haven't got any better looking

Remember in the 80's a local BP filling station had one diesel pump. It had an audio message when you lifted the filler "This is a diesel pump, are you sure your vehicle requires diesel fuel?"

Could help prevent missfueling if they still had it.

Why they make cam belts so hard to change? The only one I've done myself was on a 1980 Astra 1.3, and that was an easy job. A couple of pressed steel guards to remove, rotate the water pump to take the tension off. Apart from checking alignment not really any different from changing a fanbelt.

I think actually changing the belt is as easy as it ever was - Lancia twink in 1966 - rotate engine to known position as indicated by various marks on cam boxes etc, loosen "tensioner", remove belt, fit new (and new tensioner bearing) and tension.

Same basic engine in a counter-balanced, air con equipped, power steering equipped, 1991 Lancia, and it takes much longer to get to the belt and button up afterwards.

Modern cars have much more equipment, tighter spaces, and more regs to comply with - drive by noise rules would probably mean even if that 1980 Astra engine was still used, it would need to be buried under noise absorbing covers.

And when was the last time you saw a fan belt - even my ancient Lancias had electric fans in the early 70's.

That's true. There's a chap relatively locally who's business is just transits with broken wet belts. New engines etc etc.

Local lad to us - only does Transit and Ford Ranger wet belts - broken or not

He won't do 1.0 Ecoboost engines thou - not enough money in them for him...

Please explain your post - I just a fat dumb mechanic with learning difficulties.

I did not get the meaning of it (everything has to be black or white for me - any shade of grey and I don't get it)

Trying to bump start a tranny with a yorky in it.

We had a few york engines over the years, six pots (A series) four pot( transits ). Common conversion to get them to start on the button was to Junk the flame plug, drill the heads and fit glow plugs, never a problem with them after that.

I had a york diesel engined transit, never really had problems cold starting it, but I do remember having to rev the nuts off it everywhere because it had a 4 speed box and was flat out in top gear at 50mph.
We bought it as a throw away van off the loot for a hundred quid, handpainted in blue dulux gloss complete with gypsy horseshoe on the grille, no air filter and the drivers door window fell out if you lowered it.
Fitted it with a air filter element and housing off a marina with some coke can & jubilee clip adaptors to just shut up the intake roar row a bit as it was really unpleasant to drive like that, then loaded it to the gills with mrs's parents stuff when they were emigrating, and set off for their retirement forever home in rural France fully expecting it to explode somewhere near Calais and get onward recovery to the destination in Central France. And nobody was as surprised as me that it made it because I was following it in my then T35D Renault Master equally laden flat out trying to keep up after telling Father in law not to overrev it, which I reckon equated to about 2000rpm past the max redline. Mechanical sympathy he did not have...
In the end he drove it round as a tip van etc, but he kept running it out of diesel on the autoroute and never had a can or learned how to bleed it, and the breakdown people cancelled its cover, so I left it in the field and told him it was dead, nicked a few bits off it then gave it someone for spares. Epic motor, shame about the self dissolving chassis.

I don't blame him, especially when a crate engine is only a little north of 2k.
