Shims often come with the pads? Optional I believe. Or atleast motor factors will have them and all the little retaining clips.

I don't know, I do know they are extremely expensive and only genuine Mazda seems to be available.
If I can get rid of them then great but I don't know, @premmington can you shed any light on this?

Shims sometimes come with aftermarket pads, but usually not that often.
Some might supply them as part of a separate fitting kit.

The shims not being fitted won't cause any catastrophic failures, but might lead to a bit extra noise.
I've come across plenty vehicles where they've never been refitted, and have thrown some away myself as they've disintegrated and replacements haven't been available quickly.

Dealer pads come with shims - fitting kits.

After market pads normally come with separate fitting kits - £9 to £12 plus VAT.

I bought Delphi pads but can't find anything online for them except the stainless steel springs.
I have now found and bought a set of genuine Mazda shims after using @DanZac link to find the part number.
Looks like two shims on one pad and one on the other from the diagrams.
£26.

The rear shock mount has snapped or more like corroded away!
A common fault on these it seems but hard work finding a new one locally. Mazda don't list them separately and sell them with the shock FFS!
I told him to drive it home slowly!
